Don Dempsey Obituary

Dr. Don Graham Dempsey, 90, died peacefully with his family at his side. He died as he lived his life, gently.

A memorial service will be conducted on Monday at 3 p.m. at Jarvis United Methodist Church.

Don was born in Wilson and was graduated from Charles L. Coon High School in Wilson, after which he joined the Army Air Corps. He received B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from UNC Chapel Hill, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He was also a graduate of ECU with a master's degree in Education.

He was a member of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church where he served on the Board and Administrative Council, and particularly enjoyed singing in the choir.

Don was a long-time member of Greenville Country Club, having served on the Board of Governors, Men's Golf Association, and was an avid golfer who more than once shot below his age starting at age 71. He was a former President of The Greenville Tennis Club, and a member of Monday Night Rotary Club (Paul Harris Fellow). He also enjoyed playing duplicate bridge at the Pitt County Council on Aging and online. He loved traveling around the world; and he was a huge Tarheel fan.

He was a guidance counselor at Farmville Central High School, where the students lovingly referred to him as "Doc."

Don was preceded in death by his parents, James Carlyle and Ada Bissette Dempsey; brother, James Carlyle Dempsey, Jr.; and sister, Elizabeth Dempsey Leedy. He is survived by his wife, Faye Hall Dempsey; children, Jenny Dempsey of Greenville; Gray Dempsey and wife Janelle of Marietta, GA; and Sara Dempsey Duggan and husband Marty of Freeland, MD; grandchildren, Emily, Graham, Jeremy, and Jake.

The family invites friends to visit with them at 2 p.m. in the Parlor at the church prior to the service, which will begin at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pitt County Council on Aging (Martin Memorial Fund), or Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church, or to a charity of one's choice.

Dr.Dempsey will be missed. I remember fondly his World History class at Farmville. I am now teaching World History, and it all started with my education in Dr. Dempsey's class.

Faye and Family,
I have been blessed to have known Don, if only for a short time. He was so appreciative of any kindness shown to him, especially my cookies. What a gentle man he was. You were blessed to have him for 90 years. He was often in my prayers for recovery, but now he has a special place in heaven for a job well done. Cherish all the wonderful memories you must have. Sincerely, Charlot
