Adelaide Barrett Obituary

Adelaide D. Barrett FARMVILLE - Mrs. Adelaide Darden Barrett, 86, died peacefully in her sleep after several years of declining health on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 3:30 p.m. from the Church Street Chapel of the Farmville Funeral Home. The family will receive family and friends one hour before the memorial service at the funeral home. Adelaide was born on Nov. 26, 1921, in Greene County and graduated from Maury High School. She then attended Peace College in Raleigh. She was the daughter of the late Fred Carr Darden and Addie Herring Darden of Farmville, formerly of Willow Green. She was also preceded in death by an infant brother, Fred Darden. She is survived by her son, Robert Carr Barrett of the home; daughter, Freddie Barrett Hill and husband, Charles Edward Hill, of Fuquay Varina; granddaughters, Marjerie Jeanne Hill, Olivia Hill Collier and husband, George Thomas Collier, of Fuquay Varina. She also leaves behind her golden retriever, Abby; her cats, Pecan, Fred, Ethel and Milk Bone. Other survivors include numerous cousins, including Harper Darden of Glenn Allen, Va., Robert Darden of Richmond, Va., and Bruce Darden of Lawrenceville, Ga. Mema loved animals and this love was passed on to her children and granddaughters who have dogs, cats, turtles and hamsters. She would stop in the road on a Sunday afternoon ride, pick up a turtle and move him to the other side of the road. Mema was enthusiastic over any sport: college, high school and even professional. She knew lots of sports trivia and would argue with anyone who doubted her. She was an avid East Carolina Pirate fan. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at the Golden Living Center in Greenville; the doctors and staff in the Emergency Room, second floor South and North Towers at Pitt Memorial Hospital; her family physician, Dr. Enrique V. Marana and staff in Farmville and the Farmville Rescue Squad. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to one of the following: Farmville First Christian Church, 3776 South Main Street, Farmville, NC 27828; Farmville Rescue & EMS, Inc. 4414 Belcher Street, Farmville, NC 27828; Pitt County Humane Society, 3520 Tupper Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.
