TORRINGTON >> Theresa Gerum, 91, died Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at Litchfield Woods Health Care Center, Torrington. Mrs. Gerum was born in Homolitz, Yugoslavia on Jan. 20, 1922, daughter of the late Franz and Johanna (Kersch) Auer and was a survivor of the genocide that occurred in Yugoslavia from 1946-1948. After immigrating to the United States on October 16, 1951, she resided in Pennsylvania for a short time before settling in Torrington in 1953.
Mrs. Gerum was a retired employee with the Torrington Company retiring in 1988 with thirty-six years of service. She was communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church and enjoyed sewing, gardening and baking.
Survivors include a son; Stefan Gerum, a brother; Matthias Auer both of Torrington, three sisters; Johanna Strack and Barbara Will, both of Germany and Rosalia Bader of Austria, three grandchildren; Athena Colucci of New York, with whom she made her home, Roxann Farley and Stefan Gerum, both of Torrington, four great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and a special friend, Elmira Oneglia and her family, Francis, Laurie, Drew, Chaunda and Megan who Theresa thought of as family.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 12, at 9:30 a.m., from Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect Street, Torrington, to St. Francis of Assisi Church, 160 Main Street, Torrington, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in New St. Francis Cemetery, Torrington. Friends may call Thursday July 11, from 6 to 8 p.m.
