In nine years as a football player, I played for six head coaches. No relationship on an athletic field challenged me more, or brought forth more of my potential then the years I spent playing Football for Bruce Wearne
Coach Wearne had a passion for winning, a passion for football, and a passion for his players that lives in me and gives me confidence and resilience to this day.
In my junior season we almost lost a game. We played so apathetically towards our weaker opponent, Coach decided we should run 50 hills so that we might benefit from a reminder that laziness was arrogant, and that we weren’t playing just to win, we were practicing and working for the opportunity to reimagine what was possible in ourselves. That was a reason to never quit, that was a reason to respect, and to be grateful to your opponent, that was a reason to get back up, over and over again. It was not only a method of winning,
It was a way to live.
Coach followed stayed in touch after I graduated, in my endeavor to be a musician he came to several shows. He also checked in with me for no reason in the years following my father’s death with a phone call now and then. There were times during those conversations when I knew he was losing his train of thought, or possibly forgetting why he called in the first place.
Despite the challenges, Bruce never gave up reimagining what was possible in himself, he never quit on the idea that his heart could speak a language of love and kindness that succeeded where words could not, and he succeeded in those moments admirably.
Thousands of students carrying the echo that somebody believed in them when they were young, pushing them to do more than they thought they could, diminishing fear and magnifying hope in so many kids, now parents of their own. His good intention will echo for so many years to come, it's hard to fathom.
Coach I will see you in the dirt, with the sweat burning from my eyes, gasping for a breath, and hoping for another glimpse of something I never thought I could be. I hope I made you proud. You will always be on a very short list of men I knew who refused to let me take a shortcut, but who also accepted the path I took, and supported me every chance you got. All of those men are gone now, I hope you will find each other wherever you are, and know that I am grateful.
The way that you lived will always be an example to me, and if your wife and daughters ever need anything, there is nothing that I wouldn’t do.
I could go on.
Rest in peace sir, to me you were a giant.

My deepest condolences to the family of Bruce Wearne. I was the Simsbury football coach when Bruce was the Farmington coach. We had some great games and his teams were always highly respected. May he rest in peace knowing he changed boys into fine young men.

Our children had Bruce for a gym teacher in elementary school and
Our son had him as a football coach all 4 years of high school. Bruce instilled a sense of loyalty, fortitude and leadership in our son and
Many of the boys he coached. This training has helped Them in
Overcoming the obstacles they have faced in their lives.
He was funny, compassionate and a dedicated teacher, father and husband.
He will be sorely missed.

I hope he was keenly aware of the life lessons he taught our young men as a football coach.
One of a kind.
Remembering his smile and his strong "presence" in any room he entered.
And so many smiles come to so many of us who recall special moments in his company.
Love and Prayers to Laura, Kim and Jodi and their families.

I am heartwarmed to read that Bruce lived his life as an adult as he lived his life as a classmate of PHS 1968. I will remember him fondly.

It is not often that one is privileged to know someone with a sweet, loving and gentle soul. I had that privilege in knowing Bruce. The greatest testament to that soul can be seen in his beautiful family.

Bruce was an inspiring educator and colleague. He had that extraordinary balance of toughness and tenderness. His compassion was evident for all to see - whether coaching his teams, teaching Physical Ed, helping colleagues with scheduling dilemmas or just a sharing a humorous comment in passing in the halls of Farmington High School. I was his colleague during the time his family expanded to include Ahjing, and I remember how Ahjing's aspirations for excellence in academics and athletic competition meshed seamlessly with the Wearne family. It was a wonder to behold how those two worlds came together through their shared values and generosity of spirit. Thank you for all you gave, Bruce.

I have these treasured memories from my childhood of when Coach proposed to his wife. I think it was 4th grade and he was excited to share. I also have wonderful memories of him guiding me through challenges I had. I had vision impairments and back then, there were no exceptions. So there I was, I had to learn how to hit a baseball. It’s a bit difficult to hit a baseball when you can’t see it. Well, Coach took the time to actually understand what my issue was. My most favorite memory was when I actually caught a ball. He ran out, lifted me up and cheered me on.
Coach taught me to believe in myself . He taught me to fight for myself and he taught me to celebrate my success!
I’m sorry for your loss. He was an amazing man.
