Michael Cleveland Obituary

Michael E. Cleveland

Dr. Michael E. Cleveland passed away peacefully in his sleep the morning of July 29, 2016 while listening to his favorite classical music, to join the side of his beloved wife Joan amongst the angels. He was 78. Born in Oakland, CA to James and Cecilia Cleveland on August 6, 1937, Michael was raised in the Bay Area, where he discovered his passion for all things musical, especially piano and choral pieces. In 1960, he received a bachelor's degree in music at San Jose State University, and in 1970, Michael was awarded a Doctorate of Music Arts from the University of Oregon. Michael was a woman's choral composer. He founded the Sierra Women's Ensemble, now known as Bella Voce, and served as its director from 1982 - 97. During much of this time, Michael was the Choir Director for the First United Methodist Church in downtown Reno. Michael was a professor, advisor, and the Department Chair of the UNR School of Music. He served as President of the Nevada Music Educators Association. Michael was as proud of his success in securing the funds to complete and perfect Nightingale Concert Hall, as he was of each of the piano students and choirs with which he worked. First and foremost, Michael was a loving husband, father, grandfather and devoted San Francisco Giants fan. He was proudly on the 3rd base line when Barry Bonds hit his 700th career home run, and on the couch for the 2010, 2012 and 2014 World Series wins. Michael is survived by his daughter Kristin (George) Pickard and his Grandchildren George Jr., Grace, Step Granddaughter Sunday, son Mark Cleveland and brother Garry Cleveland. Michael was predeceased by his wife Joan A. Cleveland, his parents, and his sister Diane. In the weeks leading up to his death, Michael was diligently composing and practicing a piece to be performed for his church. Though his last notes have been written on the page, and his time at the piano has passed, assuredly, his final opus was ready for the angels, and it was lovely. A celebration of Michael's life will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Reno on September 17th at 11am, reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall.

My experience with Mike Cleveland was inspiring as he directed two choirs I was involved in. When he first arrived as choir director of the First United Methodist Church, he reminded me of Bob Newhart (mannerisms)! Although he was so busy with the University's music department, he graciously agreed to direct a small women's ensemble who sang at the church whenever the choir took a break. That was the start of a very successful Sierra Women's Ensemble which is now known as Bella Voce. I still sing in that ensemble and always remember Mike and his love for making music! God bless his family, he will be missed!

Mike, was a good friend to Alan McGee, and he came to one of our reunions, and played the piano for us to sing our class song, I know many will miss him, and especially his family.

I saw Mike everyday, sometimes twice. He brought his family to the Gold N Silver restaurant to eat, and on Sundays he would come in with his church group. I will miss him the most when he would come in with his son, Mark in the evenings and have dinner, what a pair. He always had something to say and he made me laugh. I will miss you Mike! May you rest in peace.

Mike was one of the first people I encountered upon coming to the University of Nevada, Reno. It did not matter that I was not connected to the Music Department. He cared about people and the institution. As a colleague, Mike's advice to me has stood me well over the years. He was missed when he retired and now, we all will miss him. Mike Simons, Sparks NV.

Mike was a talented composer, performer, conductor, music administrator, and mentor. He gave me opportunities as a graduate student, college instructor, and player that I didn't know existed. He was an unfailing source of inspiration and support for me, and I owe him much. Bravo, Mike, for your years with us. You will be missed.

Dr. Cleveland was my adviser at UNR. He was instrumental (pun intended) in getting me through college. I also sang under his direction in the church choir. He was a major influence on me and my musical and professional career. But more than being my adviser, I feel I can call him my friend as well. A wonderful man.
