Joel F.

GLOVER, D.D.S

Joel Francisco Glover, a retired Reno dentist who was active in local, state and national dental societies, passed away from the effects of small-cell cancer at home on December 17, 2009, surrounded by his family who will greatly miss their loving husband, father and grandfather. He was 66.

He was born on March 22, 1943, in Bakersfield, CA, to Torrance Summers Glover and Lydia Francisco Glover. The family moved to Sparks, NV, in 1951. Glover attended Robert Mitchell Elementary School and was a 1961 graduate of Sparks High School where he played on the school's baseball and football teams. He was inducted into the Sparks High Hall of Fame in the spring of 2009.

Glover attended the University of Nevada, Reno, 1961- 1964, where he played for the Wolf Pack football and baseball teams and was a member of Blue Key, Coffin and Keys, the Sundowners and Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity. He was Eminent Archon of SAE in the spring of 1964. He was a member of the UNR Boosters Club from 1971 to the present and served on the board of directors of the UNR Alumni Association.

Glover transferred to Northwestern University in Chicago, IL, in 1964 and graduated from dental school there in June, 1968. He was president of the dental school's student body organization.

At UNR, Joel met Mary Eleanor Haines, and they married August 20, 1966, in Sacramento, CA.

In 1968 the Glovers moved to Yokosuka, Japan, where Dr. Glover was stationed as a lieutenant in the US Navy. They returned to Reno and Glover opened his general dentistry practice in 1971.

Dr. Glover was a past president of the following professional bodies: Northern Nevada Dental Society, Nevada Dental Association, Nevada State Board of Dental Examiners and the Nevada Academy of General Dentistry. A member of the American Dental Association (A.D.A.) for 42 years, Glover was a past A.D.A. 14th District Trustee and served as A.D.A. delegate to the P.E.W. Foundation and the Institute of Medicine. He was a past chairman of the Nevada Dental Association's legal and legislative committee and was instrumental in establishing the dental hygiene program at Truckee Meadows Community College, which is now rated number one in the nation.

Dr. Glover is survived by his wife, Mary; son, Joel Torrance Glover, D.D.S. (Tracy); daughter Jennifer (Jeffie) Glover DiGrazia (John, D.D.S.); grandchildren Claire Estelle Glover, Catherine Marlene Glover, Torrance John DiGrazia and Julia Mary DiGrazia; and brother-in-law Charles Lightner Haines.

A celebration of Dr. Glover's life will be held on Friday, January 8, 2010, at 11:30 a.m. at Reno South Baptist Church, 6780 S. McCarran Blvd, Reno. Arrangements are by Walton Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Joel F. Glover D.D.S. Memorial Scholarship Fund, 525 Hammill Lane, Reno, NV 89511. The fund will be open to graduates of Sparks High School who play football or baseball and want to enroll in the pre-dental program at UNR and existing UNR pre-dental athletes.

Dear Mary,
Today I heard of Joel's passing. I am so sorry that I missed his memorial service. I will always remember the twinkle in his eyes as he would begin one of his "stories", and the jokes that he and Gary Williams would play on each other. I know how dear you and your family were to him. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

Joel lived a life of service to his family, friends and community and his presence will be deeply missed. It was a profound privilege and an inspiration to practice dentistry next to Joel in Reno. However, what I remember with most tenderness was the fun we had playing softball for the dental team for so many years, learning together that there can be joy in losing. To Mary and the entire Glover family, my heartfelt condolences.

I am shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of this amazing father and Nevadan. Joel always had a positive attitude and a kind word, and truly led a life to which we can all aspire. My sincere thoughts and prayers to your family.

Dear Mary.

Joel was not only a well respected dentist and member of the community, but also of the Friday morning Racquetball group from the DDAC. He had a great sense of humor and dry wit. He used to kid me when I was elated over a good shot by always saying "it does not take much to make you happy." In my last conversation a month ago, I said that it would make me and his friends happy if he recouperated soon.

He will be missed by us all, and we share in your grief.

We will all miss Dr. Glover, he did so much for our dental society for years, for the association as a whole, for his colleagues, for the dental profession, and for this community. His tireless hours of volunteer work for the Northern Nevada Dental Health Program are immeasurable; but he did it because of his big heart and because he cared about access to care for less fortunate children. Dr. Glover will always be remembered by the NNDS and NNDHP, we are all so blessed to have Dr. Glover in our lives and will keep those memories forever. God Bless the Glover family right now and in the days to come, may you find comfort with one another and with all of your friends who are here for you.

To Mary, Joel, Jeffie and the entire Glover family.
It was with great sadness that I learned of Joel's passing. He was a great friend and true mentor of mine. I followed in his footsteps as an AADE officer, but could never quite fill his shoes. He touched everyone he knew with his love and interest in "them". I have never heard anyone say "thank you" as often or to as many people as Joel did. In turn, we all needed to say thank you to Joel. A thank you for his leadership, love, kindness, and friendship.
I will always remember the sunsets and "green flash" at the house in Kona and the smile on his face when his putt would drop to beat me on the 18th hole.
I know he will be missed by you and your family and friends in Reno. But, he will also me missed by his family and many friends in the ADA, AADE, and organized dentistry.

I first met Joel the summer of 1963 and his friends, Joe Mayer, Herb Nicholas, Jean Walash, and Sam Martini. Two Alabama boys in college, Bill Rose and I were assigned to their room on a student ship from New York to England. It was a slow boat and we all became good friends and traveled together all over Europe. I later in 1980 became a Circuit Judge in Alabama and was sent to the National Judicial College in Reno that year for a month. I met the love of Joel's life, Mary and his two children, Joel and Jeffie. Since that time my wife and I have visited in their home, hunted in the Black Rock Desert with Joel and scuba dived in Lake Tahoe among other adventures. Words can't express our friendship. Its a feeling you have for someone. I will miss you Joel. Pride Tompkins
