Elden Bertrand Obituary

Elden "Bud" Bertrand, Jr.

Elden "Bud" Bertrand, Jr. passed away Monday, July 11, 2011, at his home, surrounded by family and friends. He left behind his most cherished treasure for the past 57 years, wife, Virginia (Morton) Bertrand, and their four children, Tim (Sheila), Julie (Dwight Dortch), Bud III (Yusimi) and Michael; grandchildren Ashley Peck, Alex Peck, Jared Bertrand, Jessica Bertrand, Allyson Bertrand, Megan Dortch, Keith Bertrand, Grace Bertrand, Brittany Fernandez, and Rolando Fernandez, Jr; and great-grandchildren Elias and Chenoa.

Bud was born in Butte, Montana to Marie (Fogarty) and Elden (Pug) Bertrand, Sr. on April 25, 1934. Along with his parents, brother, Roy, and sister, Mary, he moved to Reno in 1950. While serving his country in the Navy he met the love of his life, Virginia, in Oregon. While in the Navy, Bud was a seaman first class and received a commendation as a sharpshooter. He became a pilot in 1958, acquiring his commercial license and instrument rating. Bud had one of the first real estate licenses in Reno (000049), which he received in 1970.

Bud and Virginia owned and operated the Rancho Sierra Motel for 36 years. Property development was his passion, from finding the right spot, making plans, breaking ground, building and renting, and then moving on to the next project. His last project was the Eagle Ridge RV Park in Graeagle, California. Bud was always a cowboy at heart; always owning a horse that he could ride at the ranch. Then there was that morning "boys" coffee group at the "G & S." There is an endless list of individuals in Reno who are thriving due to Bud's generosity and support.

My Darlin' Boy, Dad, Papa and "Uncle" will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. "Where's my hug!"

A Recitation of the Rosary will take place on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at 6 pm at the Walton Funeral Home, 875 West Second Street, Reno. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 15, 2011 at 10 am at St. Therese Church of the Little Flower (corner of Plumb and Kietzke), followed by interment at Mountain View Cemetery, Reno.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of Nevada, Board of Regents / Football Program, Cashill Football Center, University of Nevada, Reno, NV 89557.

My husband Bill Mullins went to school with Bud, and they both joined the Navy together. He was my husbands best friend, and always the designated driver.

I didn't know Elden that well, but he was one of my husbands best friend. They went to school and joined the Navy together. They lost touch with each other after the Navy, I don't why but my husband always said Bud was the greatest guy he ever new. Virginia will remember my Husband Bill Mullins.

Virginia, Buddy, Mike and Family,
I was quite taken by the very sad news of Dad's passing. He was an exemplary man in every way. As many others, my life was changed in so many positive ways due to his unwavering generosity, compassion, kindness and his ability to surrogate parent when needed.

My deepest condolences are beyond description and words. I hope you are all doing well. Please let me know if I can do anything at all.

Wow. I don't even know what to say. I've been here going through grieving right along with all of you. One of my favorite memories was waking up and going to the kitchen to find Papa cutting through the fruits of the day and making sure we all had enough fruit! Standing around the counter reading the paper and watching him feed Madison breakfast. Sweet. I also look back and remember how much Bud and Virginia loved each other. I thought they were so, so good to one another. I never heard a raised voice from either of them. Papa was an amazing man and will truly be missed. My thoughts and prayers have been with all of you.

Bud was a good friend and will be missed by all. I have known him and the family for many years. In his own quiet way he was a great support for me at Manogue High School. He will have a special remembrance in my prayers as will all the family. May God grant him a well deserved place of peace and eternal rest!

Since we were kids and our families visited Disneyland together, Bud was among the happiest, most positive, fun-loving people I've had the pleasure to know—just an all-around great guy. Over the years, he and Virginia have been wonderful friends to my mom and dad and the other members of the "Tuesday Night Group" at Johnny’s. They made amazing memories with the BON Villa in Graeagle, numerous trips, golfing and dinners. Bud's rare kindness, humor and friendship are examples to all of us and will be missed immeasurably.
Our condolences and prayers to Virginia and the entire family,

July 14, 2011

Bud was such a wonderful kind, soft spoken man. Dallas and I looked forward to seeing him at Eagle Ridge RV Park in Graeagle or here in Reno. He was a devoted husband with Virginia always at side. He was always enthusiastic about Eagle Ridge RV Park and would stop by to visit with all of the tenants when he was there. The park was one big extension of his family to Bud. There were no strangers in Bud's life, only new friends. Bud will be missed terribly by both Dallas and me.
