William Sandy Obituary

William Gresham Sandy, 77, of Roanoke, Va., died January 6, 2010, at Lewis Gale Medical Center. Bill was born in 1932 in Callao in Virginia's Northern Neck to William Henry Sandy and Lelia Palmer Sandy. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; and his sister, Joyce Sandy. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; their three children, Sherrie Rollins Westin, William G. Sandy Jr., and Mark Steven Sandy; and six grandchildren, Lily Palmer Rollins, Story Gresham Sandy, William Henry Sandy, David Palmer Westin, Truman Kamps Sandy, and Anna Gresham Sandy. He left the Northern Neck to attend V.P.I., from which he received a B.S. in 1953. He volunteered for service in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. In 1957 he married Charlotte Ann Weeks and settled in Roanoke. Soon after, he joined Carter Machinery, where he worked until he retired in 1987 as Vice President of Sales. He was a doting father, son, and husband, whose greatest pleasures in life were his family and friends. He was known and loved for his mischievous sense of humor. His favorite pursuits were hunting, tennis, bridge, poker, and entertaining friends. He sank deep roots in the Roanoke community, where he developed and treasured a vast circle of friends, and worked to promote the city's development. He served as past president of the Virginia Road and Transportation Builders Association's Political Action Committee, the Roanoke Round Table, and the Shenandoah Club. He was a former director of the Virginia Aggregates Association. He also served on the board of Boxley Quarries. He was ever a loyal and enthusiastic supporter of his alma mater and member of V.P.I.'s Ut Prosim Society, a member of the Hokie Club, and served on the advisory council for the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies at V.P.I. Memorial services will be held at noon on Saturday, January 16, 2010, at Second Presbyterian Church, 214 Mountain Avenue, SW. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to The Lymphoma Research Program at the University of Virginia Cancer Center, P.O. Dear Charlotte and Family,
I learned of your loss through Tess. I remember the last time we saw William at the last family gathering. My mother, Edwinetta (Netta) was so happy to see him. As time moves on, you will find the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and fill the emptiness you now have. My love and prayers are with you and the family.

With much love,

Dear Charlotte and Family:

We feel very fortunate to have known Bill for the few years in his lifetime that we crossed paths. I think our best time was a visit to the Shawsville farm for a charity event where Bill invited Jim for a ride in the truck to tour the property. The two of them had a fabulous time! To me coming from the northeast, Bill was the shining example of a "Southern gentleman"! You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

With much love,
Ellen and Jim Wade

Dear Charlotte snd Family,
I know the loss of William Gresham, as Aunt Lelia called him, is at first devastating and as time goes on will seem to be a void that cannot be filled. However, hold him close in your heart and your memories let no one forget the fine Virginia Gentleman who brought you and his children so much love and joy. Then although his hand will no longer be there to hold yours his love and caring way will always be the warm light that keeps Bill with you.
With our love
Jim and Diana Russell and Tesssye Russell (Bill's Sandy cousins)

To Charlotte and Family. I worked with Bill for ten years from 1959 to 1969 and we traveled around together often in our selling endeavours. We socialized at our homes, at parties and playing poker. He was one of my favorite people. I'm sure he remained a really great guy and will be missed. My thoughts and prayers will be with you.
