RAYMOND "RAY" BENJAMIN PENNINGTON
LUMBERTON — Raymond "Ray" Benjamin Pennington, 83, of Lumberton, passed away Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018, at Wesley Pines Retirement Community in Lumberton.
He was born on Feb. 7, 1935, in Guilford County, to the late James Colvin Pennington and the late Ellen Blue Pennington. He will be remembered for his many years of service as an educator, coach and public servant.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Cook Pennington.
He is survived by his children, Raymond Scott Pennington and wife, Sally, of Lumberton and Jeri Pennington Hyland and husband, Dick, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Kaycie Hyland-Ressa and husband, Ryan, Kelly Springs, and Marcie Gettys and husband, Kyle; two great-grandchildren, Raif Ressa and Sellers Gettys; and a special cousin, Judy Taggert of Greensboro.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the First Baptist Church's Cherry Fellowship Hall, 606 N. Walnut St. in Lumberton, and other times at the family home.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018, at 4 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. David Elks officiating. Burial will follow at Meadowbrook Cemetery in Lumberton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to UNCP Office of Advancement, Lindsay Building, c/o Ray B. Pennington Baseball Endowment, P.O. Box 1510, Pembroke, N.C. 28372.
