Jane Parvin Obituary

Jane Wilson Parvin

Jane Wilson Parvin, 68 passed away on December 12, 2017. She was born in Florida to the late Duke and Edna Wilson and raised in the Panama Canal Zone.

Upon receiving her degree from Wake Forest University, she taught Spanish for four years in Winston-Salem before moving to Rocky Mount to teach at Edwards Junior High for two years and at Rocky Mount Senior High School for twenty-six years. Although a member of countless committees and professional organizations, her priority was her students. She was fiercely dedicated to them and her colleagues and was involved in almost every aspect of RMSH over the years. She had been honored as an "Influential Teacher" by the Optimist Club, an "Inspirational Teacher" by the Sylvan Learning Center, received "The Human Relations Teacher of the Year Award", "Who's Who Among America's Teachers" 16 times, and the "Eckerd Salute to Women Award". Teaching to Jane wasn't just in the classroom. She loved taking her students on trips abroad during her teaching tenure and especially traveling with her International Baccalaureate Students. There was never a dull moment in her classroom or abroad! Her sense of humor was endearing to her students, and colleagues and they were always playing tricks on one another.

Jane was an extremely altruistic person and loved to give of her time and talent to others. She was a volunteer translator and interpreter for local hospitals, police, and migrant employers, an ardent reader and supporter of Braswell Library, a State Special Olympics Volunteer, an avid bridge player, a supporter of My Sister's House, the "Cupcake Lady" to the Rocky Mount police, a member of Englewood United Methodist Church, a former member of the Rocky Mount Orchestra and Choral Society, and a long-time member of the Community Chorus. She was also an extremely active member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International which promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. Her hobby was making cards and postcards to send to her family and friends.

Her motto, a quote by Maya Angelou, was "Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud". She practiced that daily.

She is survived by sons Joshua and Jeremiah (Vanessa), four grandchildren (Maximus, Brock, Vivian, and Owen), her brother Duke Wilson, her best friends Diane Dixon, Sharon Mann, and Jane Hastings, and a host of "Zonian family".

Condolences may be sent to POB 4161, Rocky Mount, NC 27803.

A memorial service will be held at Englewood United Methodist Church at 4:00pm on Friday, December 15, 2017. Come casually dressed in bright colors and armed with your favorite "Jane" story. One of the best educators that I ever had! Miss Parvin kept learning fun and interesting! There are a few that stand out along the way and Miss Parvin was certainly at the top. I cant recall one individual that didnt enjoy their time with her. She will certainly be missed! Jeremiah and Josh, my thoughts and prayers are with yall. You both should be honored by the many that have shared the impact that your mom made on their lives. Truly one of a kind!

Most fun teacher I ever had. I was able to live and work in southern Spain over a year largely because of the confidence she helped me find in speaking a second language.
