Gloria Ballou Obituary

WALLINGFORD - Gloria L. Ballou, 61, of Wallingford, died Sunday, November 16, 2008, unexpectedly, with family members by her side, as the result of an automobile accident.

She was born April 30, 1947, in Lebanon, N.H., daughter of Grace (Merrill) and Gladwin S. Brown.

She was married to her husband, David L. Ballou, on April 25, 1964. They moved to Wallingford in 1966, where they raised their two daughters.

As a working member of the community, she was employed by various community-outreach organizations over the years. For those who knew her, she was an incredibly genuine, kind-spirited individual. She was always ready to offer encouraging words or a warm smile.

She was an avid gardener and outdoors person. It was not uncommon for strangers to stop to admire her gardens and home. A shared passion for both Gloria and David was travel, whether it was local, national or international. In March of 2008, Gloria and David traveled to Mississippi to build homes for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Gloria was an active member in her local church, Tinmouth Community Church.

Gloria was a Paul Harris Fellow, major donor, benefactor and member of the Benevolent Society of Rotary International.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, David; two daughters, Heather Ballou of Burlington and Tatha Lewis and husband Robert Jr. of North Clarendon. She is also survived by two of the greatest lights in her life, her grandchildren, William Arthur and Meagan Grace. Gloria was predeceased by her mother in 1947, her father in 1987 and her stepmother in 1998.

A celebration of Gloria's life will be held Saturday, November 22, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. in Tinmouth at the Tinmouth Community Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Tinmouth Community Church, 13 Bliss Road, Tinmouth, VT 05773.

Dear Heather, Tatha, and Dave,

It makes me so deeply sad to hear this news. Gloria played such a wonderful second mother in the summers of my youth.

But what follows right along the sadness are ridiculously wonderful memories of a woman comitted to acts of love, tenderness, and compassion, easily swayed to the miraculous, laughing side of life; always ready to play and give herself fully to the moments that mean the most and ignore the moments best left alone.

I love that Gloria was a part of my life, and I will keep those memories safely tucked in an innertube floating down Otter Creek - laughing, and laughing at the warn summer sun.
