LEICESTER - Harold M. "Harry" Cornell Jr., of Leicester, Vt., died on Friday, July 31, 2009. He was 72. Harry was born in New York City to Martha (Bruning) Cornell and Harold Miller Cornell of New Rochelle, N.Y., on August 22, 1936. He attended New Rochelle Public Schools and excelled in both the classroom and on the basketball court where he was captain of the team.
Harry earned a scholarship to the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., and was co-captain of the basketball team. After graduating in 1958, he earned a M.B.A. from Pace University in Pleasantville, N.Y.
Harry married Janet Morgan in 1963 and they raised five children. He worked as a corporate controller for much of his career. After retiring early, he began teaching accounting, investing and finance at the Community College of Vermont and, for the past 16 years, in the graduate program at Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y.
Harry was generous with his time and served each community in which he lived. He served on the school board in Valhalla, N.Y., during the '70s and '80s. He volunteered with the United Way of Addison County, served on the Porter Hospital Auxiliary Board, delivered Meals on Wheels for more than seven years, and was active in the Middlebury United Methodist Church. He enjoyed golf, played often, and among his many accomplishments, had four holes-in-one.
In addition to his wife, Harry is survived by his children, their spouses and his grandchildren: Christopher and Connie Cornell and their children Jordan, Thomas and Katie of Hopewell Junction, N.Y.; Linda C. and Gerry Hatcher and their children Brian, Nick and Will of Danbury, Conn.; Nancy C. and Erin Sommerfeld and their children Jack and Julia of Brookfield, Conn.; Timothy Cornell of Burlington, Vt.; and Jon Cornell of Tarrytown, N.Y. He is also survived by his sister, Susan Cornell Jones and her family of Pleasantville, N.Y. He was predeceased by a brother, Charles H. Cornell, and a sister, Laura Cornell.
There will be a memorial service at Middlebury United Methodist Church on Thursday, August 6, at four o'clock in the afternoon. Immediately following the service, there will be a reception at the Middlebury Inn at which time visitors can share their remembrances of Harry with his family. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Addison County Home Health and Hospice or the Middlebury United Methodist Church Mission Fund would be appreciated.

Uncle Harry was the best Uncle one could ever hope for in a lifetime. I'll always remember the fun times as a kid, playing at their home in Valhalla. I even remember one time long ago, when he once told me and my sister that we had the most popular initials, "H.C.", in the world because they were on every single water faucet. I know he's now playing Golf with my dad and can only imagine the competition. Love you, Uncle Harry!

My husband and I sat next to Harry and Janet at UVM men's basketball and even though we only knew Harry through that venue, we easily felt a connection. He was a kind and gentle man with smiling eyes, a warm soul, and a passion for the game. We send our deepest condolences to Janet and the family. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

I worked with Harry at Chesebrough-Pond's for 15 years. He was a great colleague to work with and an even nicer person. Harry, we will miss you.

Harry was the finest person that I worked with at Chesebrough Ponds. He was my boss for about five or so years and I could not have chosen a better one. His integrity was outstanding and society has lost one of the truly nice guys. I wish his family well in this trying time. Be assured that he touched many people over his lifetime in a very positive way. A finer gentlemen could not have been created.

Harry was definitely one of the good guys who leave this earth too soon. I played basketball with him at William & Mary and knew him to be of the highest morals and ethics. We shared some tough times together after an auto accident, so I was able to judge him in good times and bad. We'll miss him greatly.

To the Cornell Family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you at the loss of your husband, father, and grandfather.
I had the immense pleasure of working with Harry at Chesebrough Ponds for many years. Of all the people I worked with in my 34 years, he is tops in my book. I was fortunate to have him as my mentor and I have always tried to emulate his style and management skills ever since. He made work challenging yet we always had fun at it. He was always so caring for everyone and was a true gentleman. Wish there were more like him. I will miss him, even though I haven't stayed in touch with him as much as I should have. I just want you all to know the huge impact he had on me and he will always be a part of me. I am still trying to be more like him every day.
God bless you all,
Gerald Gartner
