Joe….I think you are greeting my fun loving friend Sara who we lost to cancer three weeks ago……she will search for hawaiian bottles with you….of that I am sure…..till we meet again….

It had been several years since I last talked with Joe, so today I decided to do a net search, only to learn of the sad news. I first met Joe when he came to Hawaii, the island of Kauai, where I had a highly successful retail scuba operation. Joe was the very best employee I ever had. I held regular staff meetings at the local ice cream parlor and it was "open tab;" you could eat as much as you wanted, and the only rule was that you couldn't take any food home. Man, that Joe could eat! Joe and I shared a well-mannered and gentlemanly character (at least in public!). During our down times, we would go bottle hunting underwater, searching for antique Hawaiian soda bottles. Joe scored a pre-1900 Codd Marble Stop bottle - a rare item! Such sweet memories remain; love ya, bro!

I have just received a note from Della and John regarding Joe's death. I am shocked and saddened. I was in China so missed the Bee notice and service. . In fact I was just rereading the note I received from Della following the deaths of my father and sister within 7months of each other so this loss of Joe took my breath away.

I was babysitter to Joe and Tom in the 60s/70s. Till they got too old. I was able to relive some of our times together at receptions at College Ave. . Joe and Tom were delighted to recall what they thought they had gotten away with while I was sitting. I was delighted that they recalled those times so fondly.
Joe followed his passions. He was a lucky guy.

My heart goes out to Della and John and Tom, Heathyr, Cora and Thea. Take heart that the depth of pain is a reflection of the love shared.

I am so sorry to hear that you passed away buddy. You are one of the really great friends and I will miss you a lot. We had so much fun together in Tenerife, diving and surfing - especially the "dawn patrols" will stay as one of the really great moments of my life. You came to visit us in Denmark some time ago and I wanted to visit you in the US. I will truly miss you. You made the world a better place. Rest in peace my dear friend - ride the big one... ;)

So shocked and saddened to hear this horrible news. Sorry I could not attend the service today but thought about him and you, Della, John and Tom all day. So many of my early memories include Joe and his entire family. All Saints, Camp Noel Porter, CKM... Joe was always a good friend, a great listener and an independent spirit. Much of that I know he got from his incredible parents. The world is a less interesting place without him.

I was so shocked to hear of Joe's death. He really was a delight to all who knew him. I saw him last summer in Ft Bidwell at John's service. Was so nice of him to come and great to see him. My heart goes out to you all.
