Melvin Chorich Obituary

Mel Chorich passed away on March 1 of this year. Born June 27, 1924 to Peter and Sophia Chorich in Perkins, California and predeceased by his sister Sally Chorich Davis in 2016, Mel resided in the Sacramento and Stockton area his entire life with the exception of his military service between 1943 and 1945. He was commissioned as a pilot in the Army Air Corps and flew combat missions in his P-38 over Europe before he was old enough to vote, assigned to the 82nd Fighter Group, 96th Fighter Squadron. Post-war, the GI bill took him to UC Berkeley where he graduated with a degree in geology. He worked 39 years at A. Teichert and Sons, Inc., performing a variety of roles in the aggregates and ready mix divisions before retiring in 1991. He continued with consulting projects with the company for an additional 10 years, scouting Northern and Central California for sand and gravel deposits. He married Aileen Betschart Chorich in 1953 and together they raised Martin Chorich of San Carlos, CA (Jacqueline Duboux, granddaughter Sophia), Laura Chorich of Sacramento, and Peter Chorich of Portland, OR. He spent his happiest days in the outdoors- hunting, fishing, camping and trapshooting. He was a member of the Gray Eagles, National P-38 Association, and The Teichert Irregulars. After Aileen's death in 1993, he developed an enduring friendship with Marilyn McRae. Together they traveled extensively and enjoyed the company of many friends. At Mel's request, the family plans no services and asks that any remembrances in his name to be made to the St. Sava Mission Foundation, P.O. Box 1243, Jackson, CA 95642.

I had the pleasure of working with Mel at Teichert 30 years ago. What a loss. My condolences.

I worked with Mel briefly over 40 years ago as a young landscape architect with State Parks; I was interested in seeing Teichert do something creative with their site at Mississippi Bar in the park and Mel was looking for more sand. Together we changed the deed agreement and dug the new lagoons that paddlers and fishermen enjoy today. Mel was immensely generous, kind, and helpful to a green and wide-eyed kid and he encouraged me from that point forward to strive for more than others thought was possible. I am sure he did the same for countless others. He was a special guy.

MEL AND I MET WHILE DOVE HUNTING IN MEXICO A NUMBER OF YEARS AGO. WE BECAME FRIENDS AND SAW EACH OTHER EVERY YEAR IN HERMOSILLO. HIS HUNTING BUDDY WAS GEORGE PAVROS.
WHAT A GREAT GUY MEL WAS...HE HAD MORE STORIES TO TELL AND I ENJOYED THEM ALL. HIS LAUGH WAS CONTAGIOUS.
I TOOK HIM AN ORANGE SMOOTHIE WHEN HE WAS IN RESPITE CARE ON FAIR OAKS BOULEVARD, AND HE THOUGHT THAT WAS GREAT.
I AM SORRY THAT I LOST TRACK OF HIM THE LAST FEW YEARS.
HE WAS A GREAT GUY AND I AM SORRY THAT HE IS GONE.

My dear friend Mel-We had some great times during our flight training. Won't be too long and I will see you again.

Our dear cousin Mel,
He measured his own success not by wealth or comfort, but by the lives he touched along the way.
When he went to Jackson, we'd get Kobasica and he would get something special from us.
Mel was always fun, with truly a very upbeat personality. The years may wipe out many things...but this they will wipe out never...the memories of the happy days when we were all together.
Cousins,
Mike and Joyce Sofranac
