Sidney Foulger Obituary

Jan. 14, 1921 ~ Aug. 10, 2014
Sidney William Foulger quietly passed from this life on Sunday, August 10, 2014 as a result of age-related natural causes.
Sid was born in Ogden, Utah to Herbert Burton Foulger and Phoebe Pearl Brown on January 14, 1921. After growing up in Ogden where he was a football star at Ogden High School, Sid earned a BS degree from the University of Utah in mechanical engineering, graduating second in his class. Sid joined the US Navy during WWII and served in Washington, DC, teaching and training at the navy school there. He married Mary Francis Flint from Kayesville, Utah in the Washington DC Chapel on September 8, 1944. After the war, Sid and Mary returned to Salt Lake City where Sid formed his own mechanical engineering company. In 1960, Sid and Mary moved their family to Bethesda, Maryland where Sid became the Vice President of Architecture and Construction at the Marriott Corporation. In 1963 Sid chose to venture out on his own forming a real estate development company in the Washington DC metropolitan area. His first projects included the Computer Science Building and The Lord & Taylor Department store in northern Virginia. One of Sid's greatest accomplishments was being the on-site General Contractor on the Washington D.C. Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Other projects included the regional mall, Crossroads Plaza, in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1974 Sid formed The Foulger-Pratt Companies with his sons, Clayton Foulger and Bryant Foulger, and Brent Pratt, his son-in-law. Sid was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout his life. He served as bishop of the Chevy Chase Ward, in Chevy Chase Maryland from 1967 to 1972. He later served as the president of the Montgomery Chinese Branch of the Washington D.C. Stake. Later, Sid became a sealer in the Washington DC Temple. Sid also proposed, planned, and provided most the funding for the 500 seat theater and performing arts auditorium at the Washington DC Temple Visitor Center. Sid and Mary lived lives of philanthropy. They were the sole sponsors of a K -12 school in Saint Petersburg, Russia since 1990. They also established a school in a village in China and built a road to that village. Both of these schools will continue to be supported through the Sid and Mary Foulger Foundation. In addition, numerous college scholarships for foreign students were funded through the foundation. Together, Sid and Mary generously helped many individuals in need. Sid was an avid golfer and musician. He loved music of all kinds and sponsored many concerts and musical events. In his fifties, Sid revived a love of the piano that began as a child. Throughout the rest of his life, he continued to study, play and enjoy the piano. Mary passed from this life in November 12, 2010.
Sid is survived by his two sons, Clayton and Bryant Foulger and his four daughters, Anne Davis, Meg Pratt, Sue Alfandre and Amy Barlow and their devoted spouses. Sid and Mary have 48 grandchildren, and 105 great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held at Gawler's Funeral Home on the evening of August 28th , between 7 and 9pm, at 5130 Wisconsin Avenue, N.W. Washington DC 20016. All are welcome to attend. A private memorial service will be held for family members to honor their Father and Grandfather on a separate occasion. In lieu of flowers, the Foulger family would request that donations be made to the Sid and Mary Foulger Foundation.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of an amazingly kind man. Sid Foulger dug me and my family out from the streets of Africa and saw us through our university education. A man so kind and noble to share our scariest of fears and yet stand firm besides us to conquer every bit of them; your phenomenal legacy leaves a foot print in our hearts. Our sincere condolences to the bereaved family; RIP Mr. Foulger

I graduated from the Foulger school in St.Petersburg and will forever be grateful to mr.Foulger for that experience that changed my life for good. It was a small island of knowledge, humanity and dignity in an ocean of mayhem of Russian realities.

No words can fully express how much I love the whole family and I know we all are sad to lose Sid, but rejoice that he and Mary are in such a wonderful place, never to be parted. As a convert to the church, the Foulger family was the first to embrace and support me as I learned about the Church then received a powerful testimony. Their love and support was key in my ability to be patient until my beloved husband, mother, mother-in-law and nephew joined me.
I know there are countless stories from others of the examples, love, support, guidance, understanding and great friendship received from this beloved family. May all be comforted knowing how many of us love them and appreciate the examples of Christlike love they have showered upon us. May each find joy in the memories and love of choice parents. Thank you Sid, Mary for your unlimited love and Anne, Jim, Meg,Brent, Amy, Haven, Sue, Joe, Clayton, Marla, Brian and Maryanne for your friendship and great examples. May the Lord comfort you at this tender time.

My love and thoughts are with you. Lori

I was visiting my brother, Terry Hinch, in Bethesda right after his wife, Paget, had a devastating stroke in 1992. Sid and Mary came to visit Terry. As they left, Sid handed Terry an envelope. Inside was a check for $5,000. What a wonderful man. Shelley Hinch

Sid and Mary are in a much better world in the presence of our heavenly Father. They were able to raise such unique and wonderful human beings as Clayton and his brother and sisters who are beyond anything I have known. Certainly they are both blessed and loved by God.

Hello Foulger-Pratt's
I did not know your parents personally, but he and your Mother raised wonderful children, so that speaks volumes about him.
Good things start in Ogden, UT ( my parents, sisters and brother ;)
My Dad even played football with Sid. I did have a brief conversation with him once where we did the Ogden connection etc. He told me the team called my Dad Snake-Hips! That info has given me a smile many times.
You have been so blessed to have him, his love and example with you for so very many years!
Rick and I send our love to all of you. We miss being part of your lives and living in Maryland. it's been too many years!!!

Sid and Mary have been cherished friends since we became neighbors in Bethesda almost 50 years ago. They were great examples of devotion to each other, to the Church, to their friends, and to those who were less fortunate. How blessed we are that they have been part of our lives for so long. We are doubly blessed by the wonderful family that they have created. We want them to know how much we love them and their wonderful parents. I know Sid and Mary are having a loving reunion as we mourn their departure from this life. Love, Dick Marriott

Dear Foulger Family,
It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of your dear Father, Grandfather, and Great-Grandfather. A gentle, loving man, who reached out with kindness to all of those around him, including little children, Sid was a true and gracious gentleman and friend. He and Mary were a dynamite team, so filled with generosity and goodness. They always will be. We thank you for the blessing of knowing Sid and Mary. Thank you for sharing them with us. We will always treasure their precious friendship. With our sincere sympathy, great caring, and much love,
The Larry and Terri F. Jensen Family
