David Bodily Obituary

David M. Bodily 1933 ~ 2008 David M. Bodily passed away on April 20, 2008, in the presence of his family after a courageous struggle with brain cancer. David was born on December 16, 1933 to L.D. and Norma Bodily. He was raised on the family farm in Lewiston, Utah where he was taught the value of hard work by his father and the importance of education by his mother. Together, his parents taught him kindness. David married his loving wife, BethAlene Judy on August 28, 1958, in the Idaho Falls Temple. They raised four children and were blessed with 21 grandchildren. David served three LDS Church missions to Japan. At 19, he fulfilled a three year mission in the Northern Far East Mission. His love of Japan never diminished and he later served two missions with his wife in the Tokyo South and Tokyo North Missions. He graduated from BYU with a bachelor's and master's degree. He obtained his PhD in chemistry from Cornell University and spent his post doctorate research at Northwestern University. David served over thirty years as a professor at the University of Utah. He was Chair of the Fuels Engineering and Chemical Engineering Departments and Associate Dean of the College of Mines and Earth Sciences. He spent sabbaticals in Japan and Australia. David's research accomplishments live on through his students and his many academic publications. David loved service. He fulfilled many Church callings at all levels. For seven years, he was a religious volunteer at the Utah State Prison providing hope to all he met. In his final Church calling, he and his wife served as nursery leaders. David is survived by his wife, his four children, Robert (Stephanie), Becky (Roger deceased) Buehner, Tim (Susan), Chris (Holly) and his sister and four brothers, Donald (Gerda), Stephen (Beverly), Norman (Marilyn), Eileen (Eric) Lyons, and Samuel (Joleen). Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 24th, at Noon in the Olympus 1st Ward chapel at 4100 Camille Drive (2480 E). Viewings will be on Wednesday, April 23rd, from 6-8 p.m. at Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, and Thursday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Sister Bodily and Family,
Our love and sympathy to you for a great husband and dad. I will always remember Dave in a scout uniform trying his best to get a bunch of roudy boys to cooperate. This is one scout who appreciated his effort. Thanks Dave for influencing my life! Love to all of you dear friends, Joe & Anne Kjar

My deepest condolences to the family of the late Brother David Bodily
It was my privilege to serve as missionary companion to Bro. Bodily in the Japan Far East Mission. I learned so many wonderful things from him because of his faithfulness, devotion, and strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Because of his good-nature, we got along very, very well. I hope I'll be worthy enough to have the privilege of meeting him again beyond the veil.

Dear Family members of 'Bodiree Choro'
As you can tell, I was a missionary in Japan during the '3-year' mission time and at one time served in a branch where there were other elders, one of whom was Elder Bodily. David and I seemed to have much the same sense of humor and I enjoyed his friendship and companionship very much.
David's accomplishments surely leave a powerful legacy that will be a constant source of strength to you of his family as well as his students.
It is always difficult when a dear one leaves us, but the comforting knowledge of God's love and his plan for our eternal happiness surely softens our pain. May you always draw from that inexhaustible source of comfort until you are reunited.

The Bodily's and the world have lost a really great man. I was raised with David and he was a straight-arrow young man. His examples of intelligence and goodness have always impressed me. His contributions to science, to his church, and to humanity are very significant in my opinion. I shall miss seeing him at our hign school reunions. May the Lord bless and comfort his family in this time of temporary separation.

Dr. Bodily was a professor of mine several years ago. I appreciated his humor and his respect for his students. He will certainly be remembered fondly by those lucky enough to have had a class or two under his instruction.
