Mary Lou Stone Romney

Mary Romney Obituary

Mary Lou Stone Romney "Grandma Lou" Mary Lou Stone Romney passed away on April 1, 2003, while visiting family members in Huntsville, AL.  The daughter of David Ray and Sarah Nield Hibbert Stone, she was born February 5, 1929 in St. Anthony, Idaho. She graduated from South High in Salt Lake City and attended the U of U. She married Richard Paul Romney on March 31, 1948, in the Salt Lake Temple. They have five sons and two daughters. After raising seven children, she earned a BFA at the U, then an MFA from Utah State.  She was a nationally recognized painter and illustrator. She spent many years teaching and was deeply involved in local art organizations, exhibits, and contests. She filled her home and art studio with flowers and plants, and her yard with trees and gardens. She loved music and often accompanied her husband and other singers. She had a flair for making costumes, dolls, and puppets. She loved to cook. A faithful Latter-day Saint, she served in many callings, but was best known as a listener. She fulfilled a lifelong dream when she and Paul served a mission in the Bronx, New York. Her newsletters were widely read and enjoyed. Mary Lou loved her family. We love her and will miss her deeply. She is survived by her husband; brother David (Bee) Stone; sisters Ruth (Paul) Lyon and Shirley Storrs; and children Stephen, Brent (Dawna), Richard (Julene), Mary Anne, Ben (Kaye), Ray (Darlann), and Becky (Tom) Worthington; 30 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and former sons and daughters-in-law including Yasmin Romney and Cynthy Saxx Romney. Funeral services will be Friday, April 4, at 2:00 p.m. at the East Mill Creek 7th Ward, 3408 S. Celeste Way (3120 East). Family and friends may call Thursday, April 3, from 6-8 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Drive, or at the ward on Friday from 12-1:45 p.m. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.

My fondest memories of Aunt Mary Lou come from my experiences as a child when we would all get together in Salt Lake for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We send our love to Uncle Paul and all of my wonderful cousins and their families. Love Mark and Halli Stone and family.
