Dear Shell Family,
I want to express to you my deepest sympathy. Coach Shell was our sophomore football coach at Granite High when I started there in 1966. His competitive spirit resonated through every game and practice. He taught us football and much more. He taught life lessons of discipline, hard work and respect that are remember long after the football days are gone. Please take comfort in knowing Coach Shell touched so many lives and we all share in your loss.

Dear Joyce and Family,
We just found out about Verl and express our deepest sympathy. We have always loved Verl and your family and will miss his presence particularly at the Hebgen beach. He was a great man and we always felt he cared about us. We loved listening to his stories. We know this is good for him, as he fought a valiant fight with cancer and didn't always feel very well but, he will certainly leave a lot of people who will miss him deeply. We love each of you and will keep you all in our prayers at this difficult time.
We love you,
David and Michele Richards

I remember Verl fondly. We played football together on the playgrounds of Maeser Elementary in 5th grade, Mr Howe's class, then later.
A good spirit and a loyal friend to his classmates!
My sympathy to his family.

I was very saddened to hear of Verl's passing. He was far too young. Verl was the assistant coach under Marv Hess when I was on the track and field team at the University of Utah and was a great help and encouragement to me.

It was a sad moment when I read of Verl's passing, and my heart goes out to your family. Verl and I have been friends for over 55 years. He was one year ahead of me at BYH where he was the football hero. We played football together, and ran on the track team. He seemed to take a liking to me as an underclassman and we had a great friendship. As Life went on, he would drop into my office at the University of Utah, and we would spend a lot of time rehashing old memories. He was always very thoughtful of others, and once your were his friend, you knew it would be for life. Happy memories will always be there. My thoughts and prayers go out to you at this time.

Shell Family,
My deepest sympathy to you. I had coach Shell as my sophmore football coach at Granite High School, 1967. He made a life time impression on me. I'll always remember him as the only coach that would ware cowboy boots on the practice field. He and coach Rassmasson, were always my two favorites. I just happened to see his picture in the obit's this morning, and after 40 years I had a empty feeling of your loss.
God Bless

So sorry for your loss. It's been a long time since last we met, but when I saw you and Verl at professional meetings I could tell what a great match you were. May you feel the comfort of the Savior at this time.

Joyce & Family,
Gone too soon. My thoughts and prayers are with you. May you find the peace you seek and may your memories bring you joy of Verl. He was a gentle giant and my idol since I was a little boy. Whenever I would see Aunt LaRie I would always hope that you and Verl would be there.
God Bless you at this sacred time,

I worked in the coaches office at Granite High School as a student aide in 1971. Coach Shell was always fun to work with and after reading his tribute I can see I only knew the surface and this great man. My best wishes to the family. Just know after 40 years one of the students at Granite, who actually was not in any of his classes remembers him fondly appreciates his contribution to the community.

Dear Shell Family,
You don't know me, but I saw the obituary of Coach Shell and wanted to express my sympathy for you loss. I had coach Shell as my drivers ed teacher at Cottonwood High School. I was actually just talking about what a great teacher he was with my co-workers. He was so kind and I really had the patients of job to teach us high school kids, especially the crazy teenage girls! I remember he would often stop off at a candy store and tell us to wait just a moment and he would go in and get us piece of yummy chocolates or an icecream cone from artic cirlce! He also taught me how to drive in the snow! He had a quiet manner, yet you always new he truly cared for his students!
My prayers are with you at this time!
