James Schnirel Obituary

James Schnirel 1931 ~ 2008 James Reinhold Schnirel (Jim) passed on at his home on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, from a condition of congestive heart failure. He was 76.Jim was born on October 26, 1931 in Geneva, N.Y. to Edwin Schnirel and Charlotte Byer Schnirel. Jim served proudly in the Navy's Seabees (Construction Battalion) on Guam during the Korean War. He married Shirley Jeanne Birdwell on June 22, 1957, in Norman, OK, where he graduated from the University of Oklahoma in Architecture. The couple moved to Salt Lake City, UT in 1959, where Jim taught architectural drafting at "Trade Tech", (now Salt Lake Community College) and held many positions at the college, from Dept. Head to Dean to Vice President for Business. He also served a year as Acting President for the college. After 25 years, Jim retired in 1987 and began his second career as a full-time artist of watercolor, mixed media, and acrylic, doing both impressionistic and abstract paintings. He served a term as Utah Watercolor Society president. Jim designed his home in Summit Park, UT, where he and his wife raised their three children and lived for 33 years. During that time Jim served as Summit Park Homeowners president, as well as a volunteer fireman and Fire Commissioner for Summit County. He wrote the grant that enabled Park City to go from a volunteer to a full-time professional fire dept., and built a new fire station, which bears his name with a plaque on the wall. He participated as an artist for nine years at the Park City Art Festival, along with his son Ben, with whom he also did several father-son art shows, including the Kimball Art Center, Park City, and the Overlook Gallery, Moab, UT. Jim's work sold extensively in Utah, as well as nationally and in Europe. His work is still shown in the Overlook Gallery. In 2001 the Schnirels moved to Wilson Arch, near Moab, UT., where Jim painted the desert landscapes for nearly five years. Due to health reasons, they moved back to Salt Lake City in 2006. Jim is survived by his wife, Shirley, his three children, Ben, Erica Langley, and John, daughters-in-law Kristina and Nancy and his four grandchildren, Alexis, Brooke, Joshua and Hawken. Following cremation, Jim's ashes will be taken to the desert he loved to paint. A private Remembrance Gathering and Ceremony for family and friends will be held at the Schnirels' home on Sat. January 12, 2008 from 2-4 p.m. Jim has enriched us all with his beautiful works of art, each of which contains his essence and spirit. Wherever you are, Jim, we know you're painting.

Dear Ben & Shirley, I hope you are reading these. I was really sorry to hear of your loss. We (Kevin, Monica and Sunni) lost our mother right before Christmas. I know it has been years, but we still think of you often.

Jim held many titles of authority and importance in his life. No title is greater than that of "Friend". It was my observation that he was kind and considerate of everyone who crossed his path.

His passion for creating beautiful art inspired and will continue to inspire his students and colleagues for years to come.

His paintings that hang in the Utah
Gallery at Nelson Labs will always be a reminder the great artist who will have a soft spot in my heart.

Jim always talked very fondly of Shirley and his family. May you be blessed and comforted in the process of saying farewell to a wonderful guy.

I work at SLCC and had the great opportunity to take several water color painting classes from Jim and knew him personally. What a great teacher and wonderful personality he was. He will be truly missed, but his legacy will live on through his wonderful paintings and his great family.

To the Schnirel family, I wish you comfort and the love from Heaven, where Jim is painting a scene, with all the eye appeal and surroundings for you all to live in one day with him.
I did not personally know Jim, but felt deeply compelled to share my condolances,as I am employed with the college, and an artist as well. What a wonderful discription of a true scholar of life. His success and happiness seems to have been paramount. God bless you, and we all have another special angel watching over us.

Schnirel Family,
My sympathies on the passing of your husband, accomplished father and friend. As a Staff member at SLCC and fellow Veteran want to express my thoughts.

To the Schnirel Family:

I took several classes from Jim for many years and visited his home in Summit Park a few times. He will be truly missed. He helped me and so many others--he was a wonderful teacher and seemed to know how to guide each one of us in a different way. I remember so many things that he said. I still have his beautiful painting of Southern Utah over my mantle. He was so gifted. May the Lord comfort you, his wife, and children.
Sincerely, Lavon Bartlett

Dear Shirley, Ben, Erica and John,
Jim was a great boss, kind man and wonderful friend. His paintings adorn my home, my office (along with a painting of Ben's) and many buildings on several campuses at SLCC. In that respect, a part of him is always with us.
My deepest condolences to you,

Dearest Jim, the time we knew each other went by too fast and at times spread over too many miles. Your spirit lives in my home through the beautiful painting on my wall. You are an inspiration.
We will miss you terribly, but rest assured we will take good care of your precious Shirley.
Love,
Another of your Goddess Daughters

Jim brought a special kind of beauty to this world. I started working at SLCC after he'd left, but he'd stop by from time to time to say hi. Jim left an enduring legacy through his beautiful art.

I work in the President's Office at Salt Lake Community College and over the years Jim and I have shared many wonderful conversations about his love of art and his desire to help others learn to develop their talent. He was truly the consummate teacher sharing his knowledge and skill with his students. One could not ask for a better friend, and I will forever cherish fond memories of him as my friend.
