Thomas Wharton Obituary

Thomas Lee Wharton
1953 - 2019
Salt Lake City, UT-Thomas Lee Wharton, Jr., was a beloved father, dear brother, and loyal friend. He passed away peacefully on April 16, 2019, in Salt Lake City, UT, after a brave and difficult battle with pancreatic cancer. Tom was born in Anchorage, AK, on November 27, 1953, to Thomas Lee Wharton, Sr., and Patty Lue (Walters). He survived the 1964 Alaska earthquake before moving to Seattle, WA, and then to Salt Lake City, UT, with his family. He was a life-long sports fan and, as a child, he loved skiing, fishing, and baseball. Tom was an avid golfer and had the pleasure of playing on beautiful courses throughout the United States and Mexico. As a young adult, he worked on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System. Later, Tom had a 30-year career as a real estate broker based in the Salt Lake Area. In 1983, he married Cindy Aldous. Together, they raised their son, Christopher, to whom Tom was a proud and dedicated father. Tom was an accomplished reader who also loved music and film. He was an expert conversationalist who loved meeting and befriending new people wherever he was.
He is survived by his son T. Christopher Wharton (Chris Jensen), his sister Sandra Elliott (David), his brother David Wharton, his nieces Peri Brown (Tim) and Loren Elliott (Kit Stiefel), his ex-wife and lifelong friend Cindy Aldous Nelson (Rick), and many cherished friends and colleagues. Tom was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
A celebration of Tom's life will be held on April 27, 2019 at City View Memoriam, 1001 East 11th Avenue, Salt Lake City, UT 84103 from 4-6:00 p.m. www.CityViewMemoriam.com

Every time I saw Tom he had a smile and a story for me. I'll miss his kind words, friendship, and seeing him on the golf course.

Dear Chris, Your Dad and I were very good friends over the years. When I was worried about buying the 4plex your Dad was the only one that believed it was a sound investment. The bank had insisted that I do some costly "repairs" prior to the closing. At the last minute the owner declared bankruptcy, stating that the 4plex couldn't be sold due to the bankruptcy. Your Dad & I spent many hours with different attorneys trying to push the sale through or get my money back. Tom finally threatened to sue them personally & have his brokerage sue them all well. That took of that and the sale went through. One of the tenants in an upper unit was angry with the previous owner, so he turned on the kitchen faucet and left the building. This completely destroyed 2 units. I was devastated. My insurance company wouldn't cover the damages. Once again your Dad stepped in and somehow got the previous owners insurance company to coverage the damages. Tom didn't need to do any of these things, most realtors would not have done what he did to help me. He completely saved me!!!!! When Brian and I decided to look for a house, Tom gave us some of the greatest advice: He said,"Don't be house poor! You don't want to buy a house and not be able to anything but make your mortgage payment." I have passed this advice on to many people. When Tom showed us our house, we wrote the offer on the hood of his car. Over the years at family parties we would laugh & joke about woes of the 4plex but he would always tell me that it was the smartest thing I ever did.
My personal memories of Tom are that no matter what you did he would tell me how proud he was of you. On your wedding day he was so happy for you and Chris. At your campaign party, he looked at me and said, " I am so very proud of Chris, he knows what he wants and he works so very hard to make it happen."
You and Chris took such great care of Tom and he loved you both so much. Please know that we are here for you and we love you so very much!!!!

Tom Wharton, Christmas morning...2011, 2012? Smoking a cigarette, watching Charlie the pit bull run away as the rest of us chase him...man that dog is pure muscle! I knew he was gonna run! I knew it.!! But also what I honestly remember most about your Dad was how proud he was of you. He literally told me every time we talked. He was so proud and in awe of everything his son did. ❤We are so so sorry for your loss. Love, Hales, Will, Bill, and Charlie
