Frederick Janzen Obituary

Frederick Verle
Janzen
3/14/1936 - 11/21/2019
Fred passed away November 21, 2019, in his home in Murray, Utah, from cancer. His life could be summed up by his gentle kindness and concern for others. He deeply loved his family and his family deeply loves him and will so forever.
Fred was born March 14, 1936, in American Falls, Idaho, to Frederick Charles Janzen and Nellie Eleanora Michaelis, who preceded him in death. He now joins them, his two sisters, Donna Carmel Neal and Beverly Gale Fitzgerald, and his eternal sweetheart Genevieve ("Jennie-Jan") Sheriff Janzen, in heaven-what a glorious reunion! He is survived by his children F. Wayne (Cheryl), Matthew (Paige), Darin (Melinda), and Brian (Rebekah); step-sons Steven D. Fowler and David M. Fowler (Leopoldo); grandchildren Nick (Mandi), Pete (Dani), Alex (Valerie), Tori (Connor), Daniel, Ashley, Benjamin, Sarah, Samuel, Andrew, Kyle, Jonathan, Joshua, and Jacob; and great grandchildren, Addie, Juni, Finn, Emma, Calvin, and Kai. He was proud of you all.
Fred dedicated his life to helping others, first as a social worker and then as a professor for the University of Utah Graduate School of Social Work. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and devoted his life to serving God and his fellow neighbor.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., at the Revere Branch, 981 E. Revere Circle (5550 S.), Murray, Utah. I enjoyed working with Fred at the College of Social Work for many years. He was always quick with a joke, but quicker with a smile. He has such a sweet way about him. He will be missed. So sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry to hear about Fred. I worked with him for a long time in the College of Social Work, as he was the Associate Director of the research institute and was one of my bosses there. Fred was the best! He was so kind, helpful, supportive, funny, and would do anything for anyone. He would drop whatever he was doing to help everyone out. I have so many fond memories, as Fred was one of my favorite friends from the college. And Fred was my biggest supporter and always gave me such great advise. I loved running into Fred on campus and I just enjoyed my friendship with this wonderful, loving guy. He leaves a lasting legacy, and will be sorely missed! So sorry to the Janzen family. Sending much love to you all, may you find peace and comfort in your many wonderful memories.

Fred was always so kind and thoughtful to everyone. He befriended my brother Dale in such a way that Dale would do anything for Fred. Fred's help when we were redoing our roof was so very much appreciated. I loved watching the interaction of Fred and Genny. Such a great couple. They radiated happiness. While I send my sincerest condolences to Fred's family, I can't help but be happy for Fred to be back with Genny.

My deepest condolences to this dear family. Brother Janzen was in the Bishopric of our ward when I was very young. I remember him as a very kind, caring man who was always smiling and had kind words to say. He made our wonderful ward that much more endearing to me. I appreciate his example of love and compassion. Thanks for the many great memories!

I am at a loss for words that adequately convey my feelings for Fred. Fred was such a wholehearted mentor - words like deep, kind, humble, brilliant, and encouraging barely capture my experiences with Fred. I was most fortunate to study under Fred, and when he escorted me to be hooded, it was a deep honor. For the past 18 years, every time I meet with a student who is struggling, it is Fred's example of kindness, patience, and elegance in explanation that guides my effort, and I hope to live up to Fred's example more every day. I also hope that the love and generosity that Fred emanated throughout his life prevails throughout our world.
