Norma Gilbert Obituary

GILBERT
Norma Cavazos Gilbert, 74, was called home to be with Our Lord on August, 13, 2013. She was born on March 11, 1939, to Josefina and Armando Cavazos in Nuevo Laredo, Tamps, Mexico. She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Alejandro Cavazos.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 53 years, Roy Gilbert, Jr.; daughters, Pamela, Monica, Gina, Marcie, Julie; grandchildren, Justin, Tyler, Evan, Lauren and Georgia. She is also survived by her siblings, Leticia Gutierrez, Hugo Cavazos, Armando Cavazos, Gabino Cavazos, Minerva Vela; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Norma attended The Ursuline School and studied at Southern Business College. She then worked for Southwestern Motor Transport, Inc in Laredo, Texas. It was there that she met her husband Roy. They married and settled in San Antonio where they raised their family. Norma, a devoted wife and mother, was very active in her daughters' activities. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years and loved taking her troops (including her own daughters) on fun camping trips to earn their merit badges. She was a volunteer at The Robert B. Green Hospital as well as at the girls' schools Mount Sacred Heart and Robert E. Lee High School. Norma had a terrific circle of lifelong girlfriends. They played Bunco and Canasta, met for lunch, watched movies, traveled together, laughed, cried and supported each other for over 45 years. She was a big dog lover and always had one (or two, or three) as members of the family. And boy, did she love to dance! Her love of dance started as a child. She even performed at The Governor's Mansion in Austin, representing Mexico. Although she had a house full of her own girls, there were always numerous friends of theirs around as well. She was "Mom" to all of them, giving advice when asked, and driving everyone to football games and parties. Norma had a smile that would light up a room, and she loved making new friends during her travels. Norma's family would like to thank the staff at Regent Care, Blanco and the nurses at Methodist Stone Oak who guided and supported us as we celebrated our last days with her.

Sorry I couldn't attend the service but have fond memories of your mom & Girl Scouts...especially camping at Mira Sol where she introduced me to chalupas. Love to hear from you. I'm still at 303 Squires Row.

I am so sorry for your loss and what a loss it is. Normita was my mom's best friend for years and I got to know her through my mother. Norma had a million watt smile and would light up any room she entered. Her laughter was infectious. I am going to miss her...She has left her husband and daughters a wonderful legacy and vivd memories. May you find some comfort in that.

Mr. Gilbert and daughters,
I am very sorry to learn of Norma's passing.

I have had the pleasure of doing her hair for the past several years and her smile and joy was infectious. She was always telling me about her beautiful daughters and grandchildren.
My thoughts and prayers are with your family.
