Robert Hilliard Obituary

Colonel (Retired) Robert Wayne Hilliard, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and mentor to many, passed away peacefully in his home on March 27, 2020. Wayne was born to Wiley Blunt and Ruth Aldridge Hilliard, the eleventh of twelve children. After graduating from high school in a small town in Alabama, Wayne went on to become the first in his family to earn a college degree. His love for education drove Wayne to pursue, and earn, three advanced degrees including a doctorate in hospital administration as well as specialized training within the U.S. Army, which he entered in 1964, attending Officer Basic Course at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. A member of the U.S. Army Medical Services Corps, Wayne's military career lasted 26 years. His duty assignments included, among others, Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the Office of the Army Surgeon General, and culminated with him serving as Deputy Commander, Administration of the Evans Army Hospital, Fort Carson, Colorado. Wayne was awarded the Legion of Merit upon retirement. In 1990, Wayne began work for the Baptist Health Systems in San Antonio to establish its AirLIFE Flight Program. When this program partnered with University Health Systems, its name changed to San Antonio AirLIFE. For twenty years, Wayne worked as the President and CEO of AirLIFE. During that time, AirLIFE received several state and national awards and recognitions, and had a safety record that included the flying of at least 42,000 patients with no air fatalities. Wayne taught courses for Webster University for almost four decades and received its "William T. Kemper Excellence in Teaching" award as Webster's Adjunct Professor of the Year in 1998. For years, Wayne was a member of Trinity Baptist Church where he served as an ordained deacon and taught junior high Sunday School classes. In recent years, he was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church San Antonio and the Freedom Sunday School class, which was important to him. He was also an avid golfer, fisherman and rabid Alabama Crimson Tide football fan. Roll Tide, Roll! Wayne was also involved with his sons' childhood sports through their high school booster club, and coaching little league in Windcrest. He was involved in the community in other ways, including serving on the board of the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center for nearly a decade. Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, Wiley and Ruth Hilliard, sisters Frances, Ruby, and Mary; brothers Jack, George, Billy, Marion and Emmett. He is survived by his sister Margaret and brother Don, as well as his four children Kelly, Michael, David and Steven, their spouses, and eight grandchildren. Due to the declaration made March 19, 2020 barring gatherings larger than 10 people, all funeral services will remain private. Wayne will be laid to rest at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. Wayne had requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to the Lottie Moon Offering for International Missions through the following link. https://www.imb.org/lottie-moon-christmas-offering/ Arrangements with

I am sorry to hear of Dr. Hilliard's passing. I was one his Students in the Webster University MHA Program. He was a kind and very intelligent man. Always willing to help us understand Healthcare. One of his favorite phrases was"Who Pays." He left his students with knowledge and an eagerness to learn more. My sincere condolence to his family.

He was a colleague, mentor, and friend. We were fellow adjunct professors and Kemper recipients while teaching for Webster University in various San Antonio campuses. He was always disposed to support the Webster faculty, as he was one of the original adjunct professors who started teaching for Webster in the mid nineteen seventies. His memory will be with us for the length of our days.

Wayne was a good and kind man. I am sad that he is now gone. When Calley Smith suggested a partnership in AirLife, I was ready to consider it. Wayne Hilliard brought professionalism, dedication, and caring to the organization he led. Wayne made it easy to say Yes and I am proud we were able to work together so well. Wayne made it happen. You should be so proud of the life he led. Please accept my sympathy for you loss.

We are so sorry for the passing of your father and grandfather. Wayne was such a man of faith and always showed an interest in others. He prayed for our daughter who has had chronic back pain for years. We enjoyed being with him in the Freedom Sunday School and Area Fellowship group. He will be greatly missed, but we know he is now with his Lord and Savior.

Phil & Frances Herron

April 2, 2020

I, Phil Herron, met Wayne at Jacksonville State College as we entered our Freshman year. Wayne had a Volkswagen Beetle, I went home with him one weekend, to meet his Mother, then, I knew why he was such a dedicated Christian and hard worker. Mrs. Hilliard told me to call her "Mom #2". She cooked a fantastic meal for us. She always had banana pudding for us each time I came back to visit. Wayne was a
strong Christian, always reading his Bible and talking about his beliefs.
After Frances and I married, we went out to San Antonio for a visit with Wayne and his family. Of course, Frances and Wayne bonded so well, that he took her in a member of his
family.
We will miss our weekly talks, but we know Wayne is in Heaven entertaining the other Angels.

Our love and prayers for you all.

Intelligent, compassionate, a keen sense of humor, a real common sense; these are only a few words and phrases that describe Retired Colonel Robert Wayne Hilliard; Colonel to me.
I have had the privilege of knowing Colonel for about 7 years. During that time, I got to know Colonel; from his very humble origins, to his varied and amazing careers, and his family of which he was immensely proud.
As amazing as those things are, he was so much more. He always had his charming smile to greet you, even if he didn't feel particularly well. He took time to get to know you, and always asked about your family. He was always encouraging your endeavors, and genuinely cared for others.
Even with his many successes, he remained humble, and was a man of great faith which he shared to others. I found his story quite inspiring.
To me, he was many things; an example of what you could accomplish with hard work and tenacity, a Christian and outstanding parent, a mentor, father-figure, but mostly a friend.
His passing leaves a hole in our hearts not easily filled. Although nothing will ever take his place, we will always have the love in our hearts and our memories whenever we need to see him again.

Love, Robbye

I am fortunate to call Dr. H. a friend as well as a mentor. I had the pleasure of working for him and with him for the past 20-years. He was a man who cared greatly for those he led and wanted the best from each of us. He had a deep, personal belief in our Heavenly Father and His son, Jesus Christ and prayed regularly for the safety and happiness of those around. He talked frequently of his children and was proud of each of their accomplishments. He took pride in our country which he had served with honor. He had a quick wit, a great sense of humor and I enjoyed our conversations. He is credited with the creation of San Antonio AirLIFE along with the leadership of Baptist Health System (Callie Smith and Bob Crutcher), leadership of University Health System (John Guest and George Hernandez) and Roy Morgan of Air Methods Corp. Dr. Hilliard set in motion a life-saving organization that has helped more than a hundred-thousand folks on their worst day. He was a kind man, a good friend, a great teacher/mentor whom I will miss. God speed Dr. Hilliard! Sincerely, Shawn

I knew Wayne from our time at Fort Sam Houston, through our rounds of golf and he was the 'best' professor I had during my pursuit of a Masters in the Webster University Health Administration program. He was a great officer and an even better human being. We have lost a good one.

Lynette Guin

April 2, 2020

Dr. Hilliard was a member of my Hueytown High School class of 1958. I have never known a gentleman who was more concerned with the welfare of his friends and family. We talked many hours during the last 5 years when he would think of someone he wanted to check up on and give me a call out of the blue. I loved him as if he were my brother, and that is the way he wanted folks to feel about their relationship with him. He will be sorely missed, but I know he will still be looking down on us as we move through our day to day lives. This is not a goodbye to my brother, Wayne, but only a farewell until we meet again.
My sincerest condolences is extended to his family. May God keep you under his wings for as long as you need His consolation.

This Aggie loved sitting next to Wayne in church. What a humble man. Each week I would learn just a little bit more about his life's work, his many adventures, and the loves of his life- his kids and grandchildren. What a legacy he has left. I am blessed to have crossed paths- I will miss him so.

I first met Dr H at the annual SAL golf tournament shortly after I started working for Bell Helicopter. It started with a dinner the night before and his warm, gentle, accepting demeanor was immediately felt and I never felt it diminish. I had been a flight nurse for almost 14 years at Vanderbilt and was so impressed with SAL and the team he had fostered. His love for his team and the community was transparent. He was so humble about his previous life serving our country and yet it was obvious it was a huge part of how he lived and worked. So many of the early medics and nurses went on to become leaders at other programs, running hospitals, disaster relief and so much more. This speaks volumes to the kind of leader Dr H was and those are far and few to be found. Sending his family prayers as you go thru this difficult time in the middle of a crisis not seen in decades. Thank you for sharing Dr H with so many. RIP sir...your legacy lives on in all those you touched.

I was blessed to have Dr. Hilliard in my life. Wayne was always smiling and encouraging when I was around him. We loved talking helicopters and golf, but we really loved sharing our devotion about his Crimson Tide of Alabama, and my Horned Frogs of TCU. I am sure Coach Saban and Coach Patterson would have enjoyed listening to our thoughts about our favorite football teams. Rest in Peace my friend.

Dear Kelly, Mike, David, Steve and Families:

I offer my heartfelt condolences in the death of your beloved father, grandfather, brother, father-in-law, uncle and brother-in-law. May Wayne rest in peace. And may God comfort and console all of you and give you the strength and courage to carry on.

I know that saying "Wayne is in a better place...no longer suffering" does not ease the pain of grieving and mourning at the loss of a loved one. And I also know that nothing I write, say or do would be adequate enough to console all of you...or ease your burden...or help you to cope with such a great loss. But you can be assured of continued thoughts and humble prayers.

Wayne was a man of many accomplishments, many talents...as evidenced by all that's in the well-written obituary. He was a man of God, as evidenced by his church affiliation and obligations. He was a good father, as evidenced by you children. He was strongly patriotic, as evidenced by his long career in the Army. He was well educated, as evidenced by his three advanced degrees.

Steve, I met your Dad at your and Paula's wedding reception, and we had a nice conversation. I last saw your Dad at your house during a party after Jill's First Holy Communion a couple of years ago, when he was happily in remission.

I close with this popular Irish blessing:

"May the road rise to meet you;
May the wind be always at your back;
May the Sun shine warm upon your face;
May the rains fall softly upon your fields;
And, until you see Wayne again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand. Amen"

Love, joy, peace and prayers,

Doc Adams (and Eileen)

Words cannot adequately convey the impact Dr. Hilliard had on my life. The high level of Excellence by which he held for himself and others that he led, will always be a standard by which I desire to hold myself too. Dr. Hilliard always had the ability to make anyone feel important, and indeed they were, regardless of their individual background. His leadership had a significant impact on my as well as others I am sure. I can truly say, San Antonio AirLIFE enjoys the rich history we have today because of the vision and leadership Dr. Hilliard had on many individuals, teammates and patients combined. San Antonio has also had the privilege to have superior Air Medical Transport because of the vision of Dr. Hilliard.

To the Hilliard Family, my heart is filled with gratitude for you all sharing Dr. H with us. You are in my prayers and thoughts during this time. Rest well my friend.

I will cherish the precious memories of Dr. Hilliard in my life.

Dr. Hilliard was a steady hand to so many, for so very long. Working for him at Baptist and San Antonio AirLife remains a highlight of my career. The team he developed and fostered continues to impact healthcare beyond walls and borders (a tribute to his family name and beliefs). We often looked at each other when he would preach the standard of excellence not fully appreciating the reality of what he built or expected. Now I know how VERY hard it is to reach, let alone maintain, something so critical. Thank you COL Hilliard, for setting the bar and inspiring us to REACH FURTHER. To his family, that you for sharing him with the rest of the world. God Speed friend, time for you to rest.

I am sorry to see the obituary for Wayne today. I enjoyed our interaction while I worked at Baptist Heath System. The AirLife golf tournament was the highlight of the summer - getting to harass and be harassed by Wayne.
My sincere sympathy to the family.
