Mary Petty Obituary
Mary Edwina Harris Petty (Mrs. Olive Scott Petty), born June 27, 1899 in Dallas, Texas, died in San Antonio, May 28, 2003. She was the granddaughter of an Episcopal minister, the Rev. Edwin Wickens, who had been active in several churches throughout the state of Texas. She was the daughter of Jouett Carson Harris and Mary Wickens Harris and was raised in Austin with her sister, Emily Harris Knauss and brother, Jouett Carson Harris. She graduated with a B.A. Degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1921. It was there that she met and married her husband, O. Scott Petty on July 19, 1921. They lived in Austin for a short time before moving to San Antonio. They had one son, Scott Petty, Jr., and three grandchildren, Joan Louise Petty; Susan Harris Petty Arnim; and Scott James Petty by his first wife, Marie Louise James, who passed away in 1981 and two step grandchildren, Tim A. Weed and Richard Oliver Weed by his second wife, Eleanor Oliver Petty. Edwina happily claims nine great grandchildren: Matthew Scott Oliver; Elizabeth Marie Arnim; Emily Kathryn Arnim; Carson Hefte Petty; Harper Louise Petty; Timothy Benson Nalle Weed; Genevieve Lela Weed; Erica Oliver Weed; Adelaide Leslie Weed; and one nephew, John Knauss of Vermont and one niece, Ellen Knauss of Kentucky. She was an active participant in many charitable groups and organizations throughout the years including the Battle of Flowers Association; The Charity Ball Association; San Antonio Conservation Society; McNay Art Museum; Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research; Trinity University Associates; Chancellors Council of The University of Texas at Austin; San Antonio Art Institute; San Antonio Art League and the San Antonio Symphony. She was a member of the Delta, Delta, Delta Sorority for over 75 years and a long term member of Chapter AL of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and the Monte Vista Garden Garden Club. Edwina Petty was also a member of Christ Episcopal Church, San Antonio Country Club, The Argyle and the Club Giraud. She was one of the founders of Petty Geophysical Engineering Company and The Scott Petty Foundation. She was a loving wife, mother and friend. Her positive and cheerful attitude, active mind and loving nature served her well for over 103 years. She is survived by her son, Scott and his wife, Eleanor, and all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. SERVICE FRIDAY 2:00 CHRIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH The Rev. Charles Collins officiating.
