Larry Segesman Obituary

November 27, 1937 - August 12, 2015
We will forever be humbled and in awe by the beautiful passing of our dear Larry. He left his physical body surrounded by family, in a celebration of love, life and laughter. If we could find no justice in the death of a man who still had so much more life to live, we were given the gift of a just and dignified death. Upon learning that Larry had cancer last December, he turned to family and said, "It is what it is and don't be sad for me because I have lived an amazing and accomplished life and I have no regrets. Take care of yourself everyday so you can do the same in the years that you have left." Larry was a life- long athlete, volunteer, great neighbor, supportive friend, generous loving father, grandfather and stellar husband. He was the epitome of good health and right living and embodied the pillars of strong body, mind and spirit; an example for all ages. Born in Venice, California, he grew up in San Monica, Upland and Killdeer, North Dakota. After graduating from San Jose State he begin his 35 year career as a civil servant, acting many years as the Personnel Director of The US Army Health Services Command, Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. He was very well respected inside of both civilian and military communities. Consequently, he was selected for and graduated from, The Army War College in 1987. His broad gauged experience was demonstrated inside the many Personnel Offices throughout his career in San Francisco, Chicago, Indianapolis, Newport News, Augsburg, Germany, and Seoul, Korea and culminated with his final assignment in San Antonio where he retired in 1995. His twenty years of retirement was just as grand as his career. He was a beautiful and sensitive soul and loved nothing better than reminiscing, sharing good books with Linda, finding new recipes and cooking dinner every night, swimming, practicing yoga and playing tennis; later becoming Coach Larry for the Tiny Tots at Shadow Cliff Swim and Tennis Club. Aside from his busy schedule, he toured the world with Linda and enjoyed visiting his children and grandchildren in California and Mexico. For many years outside of the home, Larry played fulfilling and variable volunteer roles such as a Ft. Sam Houston Mentor, routine blood donor, a volunteer at Habitat for Humanity, and in his final years, becoming an enthusiastic member of The San Antonio Conservation Society with his wife, Linda. Preceded by parents, Della and Carl Segesman, and brother, Carl Jr. Survived by wife, Linda; children, Carla, Matthew and wife, Lila; grandchildren, Morrain, Arturo, Diego and Lilian and devoted cat, Annie. Larry and his family will have a private graveside ceremony at The Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. You are welcome to honor his peaceful passing with donations to Gentiva Hospice:www.gentiva.com. I knew and worked with Larry for over 30 years. He was always a gentleman and took the best interests of his of his staff to heart. To Larry physical fitness was a must and he enjoyed the periodic athletic competition with other offices at Fort Sam Houston. Therefore, I can't imagine the personal hardship he endured this past year. He will be missed by friends, family, and the Army Civilian Personnel community...
