Paul Rothschild Obituary

ROTHSCHILD, PAUL WARREN Feb. 18, 1918 to March 5, 2007
On Sunday, March 11th, off the coast of Oceanside, California, Paul's ashes were scattered by family and friends. He loved sailing in his 41 foot racing sloop, the Y-KNOT. He was born in St. Louis and was a graduate of the St. Louis Country Day School class of 1935. He received his bachelor and law degrees from the University of Chicago and in his late 40s earned a masters degree in history at Washington University. As a first lieutenant in the infantry in WWII, during the invasion of Luzon, Philippines, he earned a Purple Heart and a Silver Star for bravery. He was VP and General Counsel of World Color Press in St. Louis, MO for many years. He moved to LA in 1970 for his exciting new career as a business law professor at USC and later Pepperdine. He loved teaching and his students loved him. He was a labor-management arbitrator for 34 years and continued working until he was 86. He is survived by his children, Jeffrey Rothschild of San Diego, CA, Wing Gee Rothschild of Seattle, WA, Mary Gee Rothschild Lane of Irvine, CA, James Goodfriend Rothschild, M.D. of Tucson, AZ, Andrew Goodfriend Rothschild of Greenfield, MA, and the late David Goodfriend Rothschild of Putney, VT, 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his devoted sister, Ruth Bettman and his brother, Jim Rothschild, of St. Louis along with many nieces and nephews. Happy sailing for all of eternity. As part of my undergraduate business education at Pepperdine University, Seaver College, Malibu, I enjoyed my arbitration/law class with Paul Rothschild. While I have since pursued studies and employment in business and public policy, I have remained interested in law as it impacts my work and the pursuit of a legal degree. Thank you, Paul Rothschild, for your positive influence. Respectfully, a former student

I am a former student of Paul's from USC - "Dr. Rothschild" only in class - and one of the fortunate ones who stayed in contact after classes ended. I'll never forget his calm presence and guidance coming into Marina del Rey in the "Y Knot?" And when times called for something less calm, what a zest for life & love he had! I'll always remember that impish grin, wink & quick wit that were integral to the dear sweet man he was and which I'll always remember.

I would like to "second" Carla's viewpoint. I was never priviledged to meet Sir Paul! However, he must have done many things right as a parent and as a person because his son ,Jeff, is delightful.
In truth, Jeff, you and your brother's are very lucky to have had a Dad who cared and was so interesting!

I met my great uncle paul when he magically showed up at my apartment in Vista Ca. Smiling brightly, and wrestling with a large, excited dog, he shook my hand and gave my fiance' a hug. That week we went over to his house, had a fantastic steak dinner, topped off by a great wine cake. Over the course of the evening, we heard family stories that had never been disclosed to me (or my father, for that matter) about my grandpa Jim and his brother, Paul. We heard stories about Paul at Pepperdine (my wife's school) as well as others that are too spicy for posting here! Paul was a unique, animated, loving man, and I wish I could have gotten to know him better...

Paul's vivacity, humor, and charm are a testament to his incredible character. I feel so blessed that my family and I were a part of his life. Paul- we love you and all the bright memories of our time together. We will keep you alive in our hearts and minds until we meet again.

Wonderful memories woven in gold, This is the picture we tenderly hold
Deep in our hearts your memory is kept, To love and to cherish and to never forget
We miss you Dad in so many ways We miss the things you used to say
Memories are treasures no one can steal, Your cheerful smile, your heart of gold
You were the best this world could hold
Never selfish, always kind
These are the memories you left behind
While you sleep a peaceful sleep
Fond memories of you, we always keep
No verse, no flowers, no tears can say
How much we miss you everyday A special smile, a special face and in my heart, a special place.
No words I speak can ever say, How much I miss you every day.
To hear your voice and see your smile, To sit and talk to you awhile,
To be together in the same old way, Would be my dearest wish today.
God called you home, it was His will,
But in our hearts we love you still,
His memory is as dear today, As the hour that he passed away.

His smiling way and pleasant face, Are a pleasure to recall,
He had a kindly word for each, And died beloved by all.
Some day we hope to meet him, Some day, we know not when,
To clasp his hand in a better land, Never to part again.

Because theres nothing but the Fondest memories running through my mind of our times together now and those memories will forever live in my heart...In the hearts of those he touched,
For nothing loved is ever lost, And he is loved so much.
Beautiful memories are wonderful things, They last till the longest day.
They never wear out, they never get lost and can never be given away.
To some he may be forgotten, to others a part of the past.
But to us who loved him and lost him, his memory will always last.

Although I only met Paul once or twice, I could tell he was "a kick!" I'm sorry I did not have the opportunity to know him better. However, if we can judge the character of a person by how his or her children turn out . . . . .which is sometimes a dangerous thing to do, but not in Paul's case . . . . . . I would say that Paul was quite a man. Knowing what I do about Paul's son, Jeff and his siblings, I know that Paul's children turned out to be people who are kind, intelligent, and sensitive to others and the world in which we live. To me, that is quite a contribution and a wonderful measure of success.

He was an inspiration to many and advised those who sought his wisdom. He was generous with his love and time. He had a delightful sense of humor and was quick-witted and great for an outrageous comment. He touched so many in his lifetime and they will forever hold him dear in their hearts.
