ROBERT STONEBREAKER Obituary

STONEBREAKER Dr., ROBERT "BOB" Dr. Robert "Bob" Stonebreaker passed away January 16, 2010, at the age of 53. Bob was raised in the Los Angeles area. After attending Cal Poly, Bob then went on to graduate with honors from the UC Davis with a degree in veterinary medicine in 1987. He started his career by working in several small animal hospitals, utilizing his skills as a veterinary technician for more than 15 years. He practiced at several small exotic animal hospitals and in 1989, he started a mobile veterinary practice which allowed him to travel nationally and internationally working with aviculturists, as well as exotic animal parks and zoos. In 1990, he began working at the Del Mar Veterinary Hospital and acquired Free Flight. In 1998, he purchased the Del Mar Veterinary Hospital upon the retirement of Dr. Roland-Holst, and changed the name to The Animal & Bird Hospital of Del Mar. Bob's specialty became avian medicine. Dr. Stonebreaker will be greatly missed by all. His practice was dedicated to practicing from the heart. His compassion and dedication to his profession will long be remembered by those who have known Dr. Bob. But most importantly, his wife Pam and their three children will continue to honor his legacy with compassionate care to all critters that happen to cross their paths. He leaves behind his loving wife Pam and three children, Kristin, Kelli and Ryan. He is survived by his mother Frances and father Kenneth and brother Dave along with numerous nieces and nephews. A service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Friday, January 22nd, at St. John the Evangelist Church, 1001 Encinitas Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Free Flight 2132 Jimmy Durante Blvd., Del Mar, CA 92014. Free Flight is a non-profit exotic bird park opened to the public dedicated to improving the lives of rescued birds and saving endangered species.

Very sad. I met him when we worked for Dr. Stoddard back in the 80's. Great doctor and very nice guy. I'm glad I got to see him last November at the Bird Mart, as I hadn't seen him for years prior. Can't believe it. Love and prayers to his family. Peace

I was terribly saddened to hear of Dr. Stonebreaker's untimely death. He had been taking care of my parrot Angel's health and vitality since she was 3 months old when I brought her to the clinic in October, 1995 to determine her sex. He was such a thoughtful and caring person, who was never too busy to say hello and ask how Angel was doing. Angel and I will miss him dearly. May he be joined by real angels, as he, too, has taken flight to a better world.

Our visits to Dr. Bob began when we acquired feathered friends, Peaches,Pepper and Albert. We always appreciated his expertise and his patience with us as novice bird owners. His gift of compassion and skill was without question, but he had the sensitivity to make us feel like we were capable and knowledgable partners in caring for our avian family. Such a generous gift is seldom found. We will miss him. Our hearts go out to his family as they find a way to treasure his memory and cope with their loss of father, husband and son.

I am deeply saddened by Dr. Bob's passing. He was always compassionate and caring. I first met him on a Sunday when my triton had an accident. I wasn't a regular patient then but he didn't hesitate to meet me at his clinic to see my Bubba.Bubba needed surgery but he had to wait a week due to the nature of his injury. Dr. Bob told me to take him home as he would feel better with me. I called him everday crying that my bubba might not make it, but he always reassured me he would be ok.He performed surgery and Bubba is healthy to this day because of his expertise. He will be greatly missed.

To the family of Dr. Stonebreaker I would like to express my sincere condolences. He was a special and caring person. I took one of my little parakeets for a visit and he took extra time and care to check him out very carefully. He cared for even such a little creature which proved what a kind, gentle heart he had.

We were in London when we received the heartbreaking news about Dr. Bob. His loss is beyond words. The Stonebreaker family has been in our thoughts and prayers ever since. We are so sorry we weren't back in the country to attend the service but we were there in spirit. Dr. Bob has been a part of our lives for over 20 years caring for our birds and our dogs. It is because of his skill, dedication and compassion that our bird, Pookie, is still with us. We will also be forever grateful to Dr. Bob that our dog, Boomer, is still with us. He nearly died twice. He has always been there for our kids no matter what or no matter when. We will miss our visits to him. He had such a great sense of humor. He and my husband would always have a good laugh when we brought the kids in for their various appointments. We will miss his touch and his wonderful nature, not only as our veterinarian but also as our friend. He is irreplacable and we will miss him so much.

Our hearts go out to Pam and the children. We are here for you if you need anything.

Love, Tony, Kae, Boomer, Mya, Dewett, Pookie and Roxy

I'll never forget Dr. Stonebreaker's own tears when he told me my bird, Romeo, had died in the incubator overnight. What compassion he had! We'll all miss him...

We will miss Dr. Stonebreaker and so will our dog Lulu. He has been our veterinarian for the life of three of our dogs. He always took the time to explain and to listen and to understand and sympathize when we needed it. We send our condolences to his family. Harry and Phyllis Woods

Like many others, we are so saddened by the loss of Dr. Stonebreaker. He was such a warm and caring individual, and his knowledge and expertise as a veterinarian will be unsurpassed by any other. We first met Dr. Stonebreaker many years ago when he tenderly cared for our three cockatiels. Recently, when our son and daughter-in-law's (Chad & Natalie) Boston Terrier had to have major leg surgery, they went to see Dr. "Bob." So typical of Dr. "Bob" to not only "mend" their precious dog, but to have added another satisfied "patient" to his long list! Dr. Stonebreaker was an incredible veterinarian who will be deeply missed by all. To the Stonebreaker family, may you find some solace in knowing that in our families' eyes, God has the best veterinarian possible-he will take good care of all creatures in Heaven!

Pam, I was shocked and saddened beyond imagination when I learned of Dr. Bob's death. I wish now that I had expressed to him just how meaningful my experience at Free Flight was, how much I enjoyed working for him, and how every day I am grateful to have Katie girl, my golden, in my life. My heart goes out to you and your children Pam, and I hope that you find comfort in the knowledge that Bob enriched so many lives.

Dr. Bob was a very patient and caring gentleman. Years ago, while living in New York, I phoned him with a problem I was having with my Goffin’s Cockatoo that I had purchased at Free Flight during my summer vacation in San Diego. Dr. Bob instructed me how to correct the problem my bird was having at the time. Without a doubt, everyone who knew Dr. Bob will miss him very much. All of God's helpless creatures will also miss him. May God Bless the Stonebreaker Family. Sincerely, Rose

On a rainy Sunday many years ago, I noticed my parrot had injured her beak and could not eat. I called Dr Stonebreaker. I was not an established pt, but he did not hesitate to have me bring in my bird. He fixed her up & only charged me $40 for a Sunday afternoon emergency visit. He was all about the animals. He will be missed.

We offer our sincerest condolences for your loss. We lived in Oceanside over 10 years ago and Dr. Bob was such a special part of our lives with our amazons and african grey parrots. He helped us through some delicate times and we felt there was no better place for our animals. He was also a wonderful teacher and encouraged me to continue my education in Avian medicine. When we moved to No. CA, it took many years to find someone to fill that space. We still miss his touch and caring nature for all animals and thank him for all he did. To his family, our thoughts are with you.

It is with enormous sadness, but a grateful heart that we had the opportunity to know Dr. Stonebreaker over these many years. He loved his life, his animals and he showed our many guinea pigs that he cared for them when no one else knew how. A man of integrity, humor and dedication to so many families whom he would call late into the night for an update on a furry or feathered friend. His loss is huge and we hope his family finds strength in knowing how much he was adored. Bless you Dr. Bob. With thanks, Linda, Tom and Amanda Lindenmeyer, and all the "guinea pigs" who owe their longevity to you.
