ALISON CHRISTLER Obituary

CHRISTLER, ALISON RING North County Loses Treasured Artist "Paint without fear!" Alison said. Those of us who knew her and loved her will remember that Alison lived her life that way, "without fear." She was the epitome of generosity. She deeply affected each life she touched with her humor, kindness, and humility. She was an extraordinary artist and a magnificent friend. She left us the treasure of her art. We will always treasure her in our hearts. Alison Ring Christler was born on March 13, 1944 in Orange, California to Harold and Julia Christler. Her parents owned and operated The Islanders, a fine furniture and interior design store in Newport Beach where the family lived. A natural athlete, Alison excelled in water sports including surfing and 50-meter sailboat racing. From the age of four, Alison trained to be a concert pianist, but after graduating from UCLA with a BS in psychology, she spent seventeen years working in the family design business. During this time, Alison studied art of all kinds. Alison was one of the most distinguished and honored artists of Encinitas, regularly winning the highest awards in southern California shows such as San Diego Watercolor Society's International Exhibit and Watercolor West. She was a member of the San Diego Watercolor Society, San Dieguito and Rancho Santa Fe Art Guilds, La Jolla Art Association, Carlsbad/Oceanside Art League, Fallbrook Art Association, and Southern California Plein Air Painters Association. She served on their boards and was a judge and juror for their shows. Believing in the theory that a truly good artist needs to have a strong ongoing education, Alison participated in dozens of workshops and courses by the best artists she could find. That experience and education made her an excellent teacher and a good communicator in the subject she loved so much. Many of us were fortunate to attend her courses at the Rikki Reinholz Studio of Art and Design in Solana Beach. So great was her courage, so deep her dedication, that she continued teaching for a while, even after she had learned of her terminal diagnosis. The Christler family, brother Bart, wife Sandy, and brother Chuck plan a simple memorial gathering at Grandview Beach in Encinitas, November 1st, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.

She will be missed. A late-night Google search for old acquaintances took me to this page. I have been in Korea for 27 years and did not keep in contact with Alison. Still, her warm smile and easy laughter are remembered fondly. My condolences to the family and those of you who felt a special closeness to Alison. She was a lovely person, and she will be missed.

I met Alison last winter when I was here in California for the winter months. I am so sad about her death. She was a wonderful teacher and so enthusiastic about art, her life. I will miss her.

I am in shock in learning that Alison Christler is gone! I saw her last in Encinitas in June and wanted to purchase one of her paintings. She was going to bring it to Fallbrook, but I never heard from her again. I have been thinking of her and wish I had known that she was ill, so that I could have been in touch. My condolences to her family. She was a wonderful, positive, beautifiul person, who will be missed. I am happy that I knew her as much as I did.

Alison I shall always remember you for your sweet kind nature. Your untiring wiliness to help others. Your delightful smile that lit up any room you entered. Your trademark hats you wore that made you recognizable even from the back of the room. You have left many indelible happy memories that I will cherish always.

Alison, I imagine that you are chasing your wonderful straw hats among the clouds. I so enjoyed working with you in our paint-outs, my very much missed co- vice president of the San Diego Watercolor Society.

My heart is very heavy about the lose of Alison. I've been contemplating her paintings in my home and finding it hard to believe that she's gone...yet she is there in each brushstroke. My sympathy to her family and to her many friends.
Best to you always, Alison,
Susan

Alison was such a delightful person and always so enthusiastic about art and painting. As she critiqued a painting that had its flaws, she could find something wonderful to say about a section that worked and would exclaim gleefully "look at this ." She would encourage the artist to charge ahead and let the paint flow, literally.
I am devastated that she is gone, and I will always remember her wonderful smile and laugh. Alison’s influence has helped me to become a better painter and I will keep her close in my heart as I let the paint flow.
With love to the family,
Penny Fedorchak, Fallbrook
