Lois Simmons Obituary

Lois Jean Simmons February 21, 1932 - May 12, 2020 San Diego Lois Jean Wegwart was born in the midst of the Great Depression, in West Virginia. She had a passion for art and for sports and for teaching. She came to San Diego after the Korean War, and met her husband, Pete Simmons, at The Pennant on Mission Blvd. They spent their youths in Mission Beach, eating cheeseburgers at Rocky's, and playing Over-the-Line with OMBAC. Lois would win the happy couple free beer by rolling up her sleeves and showing the boys she had the better biceps. She taught P.E. at Point Loma High School, but when they were transferred to different cities for Pete's job, Lois began to put all her effort into being a mom, being a professional artist, and playing competitive tennis. Back in San Diego once again in 1977, she eventually ran her own art gallery in Old Town and was able to team up on the tennis court with many local legends, participating in national tournaments into her 80's. Lately you might find her at the Redwood Bridge Club in Balboa Park. She was a competitor, right until the end. She gave Death a tough go; but when it was over, they shook hands, even though there were some questionable line calls. Then she leaned in and said, "how bout two out of three?"She is survived by her three sons, Tom, Bob and John and their wives Ashley, Darice and Anne; her sisters Bev and Barbara, and her Grandkids, Sammi and Ryan.

Lois had a beautiful tradition. She would make dinner on a Sunday night. She had foreign exchange students living there as well. Her boys, their girlfriends , we were all there' no excuses. During the evening we went around the table and shared what we did that week. I loved this experience! This beautiful tradition has gotten lost in todays me society! I lived with her for close to three years. I was son number 4. She's responsible for me getting serious about tennis. I was a baseball player. She would tease me, "You won't always run around with 18 people for a ball game. You'll have no trouble picking up a tennis match. Being a pitcher, it was not a difficult transition. She knew I was still playing, it made her very happy. She was an Excellent player. Great artist and a Super 2nd Mom! Every Mothers Day I would send her a card and give her a call. We stayed close up until the end! Thank you for everything Lois! You're probably painting pictures of my Mom in Heaven. I will never forget your kindness and beautiful spirit!
Happy Mothers Day!
Love, Rick

Another Lois story. I was renting from her in the early 90'svin North Park. We could not find the cat Sprout. We could hear it though. Sprout was inside my guitar case, chilling out. It must have enjoyed the soft lining. I will go hit some tennis b balls in your honor. Happy Birthday Mom!

She was the Varsity Tennis coach for girls at Valhalla High School, and I was one of the assistant helpers for her. She related very well to all the kids and they all really liked her as did I.
