Santa Cruz lost one of its brightest lights on Sunday evening September 5th with the death of Nurse Claire Baldwin. She died peacefully at her home here in Santa Cruz after a battle with Cancer. At the time of her death she was surrounded by her friends and family, she was 58 years old.
Claire Baldwin was born in Yonkers, NY, the third child of Matthew and Elizabeth Baldwin. Claire was raised in Yonkers, NY and Middletown, NY before moving to the Santa Cruz area in 1981. She attended both Blessed Sacrament Academy in Yonkers, NY and Middletown High School in Middletown, NY. Claire graduated from Orange County Community College in NY State in 1980 with a degree in nursing. RN Claire Baldwin spent most of her professional career as a member of the nursing staff at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz, most recently in the cardiac unit. At Dominican Hospital Claire Baldwin was greatly admired for the quality of care she provided her patients and she was respected by both the nursing staff and physicians.
Claire is survived by her sons Eric and Ryan Schofield, her brothers Brian, Kevin, Patrick and Declan Baldwin and her sister Graceann Gilleland; numerous nieces and nephews. Among her closet and dearest friends were the nurses at Dominican Hospital, a few close neighbors from Otis Street and her beloved "Murphy girls"; Mary, Peggy, Patty, Cathleen and Eileen.
Family and friends may pay their respects at Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel 1050 Cayuga Street in Santa Cruz, from 2pm-4pm and 5pm-7pm on Thursday, September 9, 2010 with a Vigil Prayer Service beginning at 7p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Cross Catholic Church on Friday, September 10, 2010 at eleven o'clock a.m.

I can not think of the times we had together without tears; buying dresses for the community hospital christmas parties, evening shifts on the second floor, walks along the beach with the kids. Thanks for being a bright light in my life!

memories are a treasure time cannot take away so may all be surrounded by happy ones today ,may all the love and tenderness of the years well spent come to you to fill your heart with beaty and content ,and may you walk down memory lane and meet the one you love for while you cannot see her she will be watching from above and trust your dreaming and your faith will make it true ,and if you listen with your heart she will come and talk to you so for her sake be happy and show her your love has proven strong and big enough to reach down from above and you will never walk alone and when memorys door swings wid you will find her always at your side .

Dear Claire,
We're so saddened by your passing into the next phase of life with Aunt Betty and Uncle Matt. Though cousins and family may have been separated by distance, they were always close in spirit. To Eric and Ryan and the Baldwin family, our deepest condolences. There are no words that can take away the pain of missing a loved one. Hold each other close and treasure your moments together.
With our prayers and love,
Bob & Nancy Maser

I can never remember seeing Claire without a smile. She loved her profession as a nurse and she was one of the best. I loved working beside her because she made you strive to be the best. My sympathy to the family, take comfort in knowing Claire was loved by so many people and now her smile is beautifying the heavens.

We (my partner Gail & I) will miss Claire greatly. On three separate occasions she was my primary RM in Dominican's Cardiac unit and shared an incredible ability to bring peace and caring in moments of concern during intense health crisis. We will always have a special love for Claire.
May she now rest in eternal peace.
