Kathryn McBride Obituary

Mary Kathryn McBride
January 28, 1950 - February 23, 2012
Resident of Soquel, California
Our beloved Mary Kathryn McBride passed away at her beautiful home in Soquel on February 23 2012 with her son Joseph and dear friends by her side. She maintained her dignity throughout her illness with Cancer, keeping her optimism, grace, and bright spirit alive until the end.
Kathryn was born on January 28th 1950 in New York City and moved to the Bay Area at an early age. She graduated from San Francisco's Lowell High School in 1968. Throughout Junior High and High School she was involved in Synchronized Swimming where she won national championships with the San Francisco Merionettes. She received her BA and MA in Ceramic Sculpture from San Francisco State University in 1975 and launched her teaching career shortly thereafter. She taught Ceramics for twenty years in the Bay Area before landing a prestigious position at Cabrillo College where she was a Ceramics Instructor as well as the head of the Ceramics Department. She continued teaching until just before she passed.
Kathryn was highly regarded and a well liked teacher who will be missed dearly by all those whose lives she touched. She had the amazing ability to coax the inner artist out of anyone and help guide her students in the direction they chose. Kathryn was always humble, treating everyone with kindness, patience and respect, and her students felt honored by her level of dedication. Kathryn leaves behind a legacy of students, from the little children she taught in her own home studio, through her college students and seniors.
Kathryn's art was a personal narrative of her journey through life. Her unique pieces were extraordinary because of her incredibly intricate work, the surprise of their life like quality, and the sense that each one held a potent story. In her own words: "I create small-scale, narrative sculpture. My goal is to share a reverence for Nature, exquisite craftsmanship, and the wonder I experience when I am fully present in the creative process. I am attracted to vintage objects from an era of quality design and fine craftsmanship, enjoy the rich, sensuous textures of plant-life, animals, and fabrics."
Kathryn McBride's works are exhibited in museums and private collections across the country, including the Ferrin Gallery in Massachusetts, The Museum of Art History in Santa Cruz and the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University. Her sculptural teapots can be found in several books including: 500 Teapots, 500 Figures, and Teapots Transformed.
Kathryn was a devoted mother, an avid gardener, and a wonderful cook interested in fresh local food. She took the time to be present with friends and family, giving thoughtful hand written cards, and sharing flower arrangements from her garden. She will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, sense of humor and contagious laughter, her refined sensibilities, integrity, and always doing the right thing.
She is survived by her son Joseph McBride, his half sisters Mia and Aiyana, her parents Bob Mary McBride, her sister Nancy and brother in law Kevin their daughter Julia, her brother Scott and sister in law Janice and their son Matthew and daughter Monica and husband Marshall, and Kathryn's grand nephews, Zachery and Cody, innumerable friends, students and the art community.
The Cabrillo Foundation is establishing the following two funds in honor and memory of Kathryn McBride: The Kathryn McBride Cabrillo College Ceramics Program Fund (to support the ceramics instructional program at Cabrillo College) and The Kathryn McBride Scholarship Fund (to fund art scholarships for Cabrillo College students). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made by check, payable to "Cabrillo College Foundation." Please indicate on the check memo line either "Kathryn McBride Scholarship Fund," or "Kathryn McBride Ceramics Program Fund," and mail to: Cabrillo College Foundation, 6500 Soquel Drive, Aptos, CA 95003.

It was my honor and true pleasure to know and love Kathryn through Cabrillo College classes. Fun, serious, conscientious, creative and caring, caring, caring, Kathryn gave life her all. A true lady and a dedicated, sensitive teacher, I never heard a negative word about her, whether the student was 16 or 66! She loved us all and we loved her back. I'll always miss her. Here's to you, lovely one! xxx

This photo was given to me by Kathryn (aka Blanche) around 1983 when I was her student at San Francisco State University. An exemplary teacher and wonderful person. My life is richer for having known her. Be at peace, dear.

Oh Dearie ... so long since we visited. It seems like yesterday we were 15 and 16 - swimming like water puppets. Borodin and Khatchaturian. It was such an honor to be duet partners with you. I treasure all your beautiful gifts. Graceful hands and generous heart. Your laughter, Junior Mints and Animal Crackers. Your friendship means the world to me. Thank you my dear swimming sister. I will share swimming pictures with your friends as soon as I figure out how to put them in your guest book.

Thank you, Kathryn for your inspiration, warmth, expertise and friendship. I will cherish the memories of our Tuesday/Thursday ceramics nights, the friends we all became, our huddled evenings, all together over dinner, wine, lots of laughter, Joseph's trains, and the cozy little house over-looking the pond. Magic.

I cannot think of a kinder person. So entranced by the intricate details of life. You taught me to cherish those qualities within myself.

Though I never understood you're selflessness I suppose that was how you were able to touch so many lives.

May you rest in peace.

To work and worship with your hands…. Your hands

To conjure and create with Earth, Wind, Water, and Fire

An Alchemist of Beauty

Your refined focus for detail, midwifing stories through teapots
that come alive, make noise, whisper secrets and dance with innuendos

You traveled the road of clays creations thru an ancient ancestral craft
that ferried you through other cultures, world religions and wove your patience and persistence with a smiling acceptance "that all these pieces break, you can't get too attached, that's just the way it is"

The journey and the pleasure is in the process of making oneself available to the magic and the muse… trusting your hand… trusting your heart

With your wood nymph demeanor, bright eyed smile and Celtic wit
you walked your Light through our world…
a sister, a mother, a daughter, and a Lover of Beauty
which you molded, coerced, and conversed into precious sacraments of fire and clay with the alchemy of the philosopher's stone….

And Kathryn… your most precious, awesome work of art,
a work of labor, many years, much patience and the love of your life-

Thank you for your son… Joseph

to carry your spirit,
your genius,
your hearts story.

Amen

I had the privilege and honor of being a student of Kathryn's. From her I witnessed and learned that the art of creating was not so much about having great inspiration or wielding exceptional skills (things she had in abundance). It was about being present, having patience, and loving the process. I am forever changed by my experience in her classes and am eternally grateful.

Kathryn, thank you for all that you did for me and with me, in the late 70's and 80's. In the 90's we were both busy with kid stuff and our working lives! I was so glad we just re-connected two years ago; and had some laughs together. You were truly one of the angels that walk on this earth. You were so dedicated to your Cabrillo College community of students and your art, not to mention, your son and family! I just wished I would of shared with you how much you contributed to my spirit! PS...(Kathy) thanks for keeping my mom's rocking chair safe and sound, for so many years in your sweet and loving home! You will be deeply missed! All my prayers, thoughts and love are sent to Joseph and your entire family.
Love, Charmaine

the Cabrillo College community and Santa Cruz county has lost a great ceramic artist and friend, Kathryn McBride. Kathryn and I shared the love for everything vintage and celebrated our birthdays together for many years, watched movies like the Long, Long Trailer, The Gang's All Here and of course, while eating my chicken enchilada's -- which she LOVED. Please take a moment to send her love. Please come visit me in my dreams Kathryn. maybe we can do something together......in my dreams.......may peace be with you

Katherine McBride was such a special woman and artist who shared a magical gift of making art a wonderful experience for her students during her time at Santa Cruz Montessori. Both of my son's have such fond memories of her ceramic classes and the beach fires. What a lovely woman...

Kathryn studied Flamenco dance with me for a number of years. She touched me very deeply and I so enjoyed having her in my class. She loved Flamenco and had a deep and joyful sense of its rhythms. We certainly shared a love of Flamenco.
We also shared love of art, alternative medical approaches and gardening and fresh food. Last year when my husband and I returned from our annual 3 month journey to Spain, I realized that I was out of lemons, so again Kathryn brought me a big bag of lemons from her tree. Now when I pick my full tree, I think of Kathryn.
I feel that my life has been made richer by knowing her and I still find it hard to believe that she is no longer in this world on this plane. Her death is one of those that has affected my core.
I offer my deepest condolences to her family.

I sure will miss Kathryn's presence at Cabrillo College. Even when I wasn't in a class with her, she would reach out and ask if I would like to be involved in her latest ceramic endeavor. It would be a lot of fun. Teaching in the new clay facility at Cabrillo was like a vacation for her. Paul Morris

Although our lives intersected for only a short time, I felt blessed by her burning spirit and creativity. She saw everything with child-like wonder and appreciation.
She infused others with her energy and artistic disposition.
Always, gentle and caring, she could astound others by plumbing creative depths with
potent ceramic creations, which left one realize what a profound soul she harbored. I felt blessed to have spent time with her and her then partner RIchard.

It's impossible to even touch on who a person really is in a remembrance. And even given unlimited space on a page to tell you what kind of person Kathryn was is hard. She was the most gentle, caring person I have ever known and I'm 64, having been friends and ex-partner with Kathryn since 1973. To a fault she cared so much about others there was little left over for herself but now she has the rest of eternity to indulge. Your time was well spent Kathryn.

She created many monumental works of ceramic art over the years - some that defy imagination and one's own subjective vision of what clay can look like. Kathryn specialized in ceramic realism and I'm surprised the art world didn't recognize it in the same way as photorealism, an official genre in painting, because she would then get the acknowledgement she always deserved. Not that she wasn't recognized - but she was under appreciated. However, her greatest work was not ceramic. It was her son Joseph who she raised alone and if there ever was an endorsement for single motherhood, Kathryn is it. It comforts me that he is walking this earth spreading the same love that Kathryn spread.

Her passing has been a great shock to me and one that won't heal quickly but it's comforting that she's now bathing in the answer to the greatest question of life. While you're irreplaceable down here on earth, I know you will rest and play in peace Kathryn.
