Sandra Haug Obituary

SANDRA HAUG Sandra Haug, respected and loved mother and wife, passionate sister, generous friend and career public servant, died November 4 from pancreatic cancer. She was 69. She is survived by her husband, Gary Haug, her daughter Flannery Burke, Flannery's husband, Pat Burke, and their son, Kevin; and her son Martin Haug, Martin's wife, Kelly, and their daughters, Lila and Kali. She is also survived by her siblings, Sharon Reed, Roch Gaussoin, Helen Gaussoin, and Kristofer Gaussoin, their spouses and many adoring nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Sandra, the oldest of seven brothers and sisters, was the matriarch of a tight-knit family and often hosted parties for friends. She had a keen aesthetic eye and loved roses and gardening and creating art. She was gifted at providing sound advice and quick to recognize and promote the talents of those around her. Sandra, a graduate of Mount Saint Scholastica College in Atchison, Kansas, helped establish the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department when it was created and served as the administrative services director at the Health Department and the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department. She also worked for the State Library and the Records Center and Archives during her 14 years with state government. In addition, Sandra created several businesses that provided training and helped private businesses negotiate the state bureaucracy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edmund and Dena Gaussoin, and her brothers, Dirk and Martin Gaussoin. Sandra donated her body to the University of New Mexico Medical School and asked her family to hold a memorial service in the spring. In lieu of flowers, Sandra asked her friends and family to donate to the Food Depot, Santa Fe Botanical Garden and Presbyterian Hospice.

Sandra is in my thoughts so often. Her work friends benefited so much from knowing her. She loved her family so deeply, and expressed it in the stories she told. "That won't never do," she would say, quoting Martin, when she wanted to exhort her colleagues to do a little better. "Sex is what keeps me from flying away into the sky," when she wanted friends to know how much she loved her wonderful husband. And ideas live in Flan's books, as I read each one and enjoy memories of wonderful conversations. Aren't we fortunate to have loved her?

I'm sadden by Sandra's passing and send my deepest condolences to her family.
I had the pleasure of working with Sandra at Experior. She always emphasized the importance of Quality over Quantity. Her assertiveness earned her respect among her peers, her passion for roses, and her encouragement for higher learning are the memories I share of her.

May she rest in peace.

A true friend and a great State bureaucrat. She was a wonderful person to work with and always had the right phrase or word to describe the situation. I will miss her sense of humor!
