STEPHEN LEVINE Obituary

STEPHEN W. LEVINE American author, poet and teacher, Stephen Levine died in his home in Chamisal, New Mexico after a long illness on January 17, 2016. Levine was born in Albany, New York on July 17, 1937. He is survived by his wife, Ondrea Levine, and his children Tara Levine, Noah Levine and James Valentine. Levine's work and writings focused on spiritual growth, death and dying, grief and trauma healing, and the preservation and celebration of the beauty and mystery of the natural world. Thousands of people attended workshops given by the Levines and thousands more have read his books and listened to recordings of his talks, most of which were done in collaboration with his wife and partner of forty years, Ondrea Levine. After working as a writer and editor in New York City, Levine co-founded and served as the editor of the San Francisco Oracle in 1966. Levine's first book was a collection of poems, A Resonance of Hope, published in 1959. His spiritual autobiography, Turning Towards the Mystery, was published by Harper Collins in 2002. Thirteen books by Levine are currently listed on Amazon. Levine was one of a generation of pioneering teachers who, along with Jack Kornfield, Joseph Goldstein and Sharon Salzberg made the teachings of Theravada Buddhism more widely available in the west. Levine also worked closely with Elizabeth Kubler-Ross and Ram Dass, aka Richard Alpert, using meditation and mindfulness techniques as a means for coping with death and dying, grief, chronic illness and loss. Levine and his wife, Ondrea, ran a 24 hour free telephone hotline for the dying and for those in need of support for several years and they regularly corresponded with thousands of people seeking support and guidance over several decades. Buddhist author and teacher, Jack Kornfield wrote the following words on his blog last week after learning of Levine's passing: "I can hear Stephen Levine's loving voice counseling healing awareness, soft belly, compassion, and mercy within mercy to all who came to see him and his beloved partner, Ondrea. Their students brought everything, their spiritual longing and beauty along with trauma, loss, brokenness and encounters with death. Stephen and Ondrea welcomed them all with unbounded tenderness and heartfelt courage...as a beloved friend and colleague, Stephen perennially inspired me, deepened my understanding of how to practice in the fire and how to stay open to love. He sat with death a thousand times, wrote poems for a year in the wilderness, created whole new forms of healing, and spoke to several generations through his writings and recordings." A memorial celebration of Stephen's life will be held at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, CA on February 19th.

So thankful to experience a retreat at Mount Madonna near Watsonville. If Stephen were with us leading a retreat now I would relish the opportunity. What a gift to have read his books and experienced this retreat.

Hi Andrea,
I am leading a group on discussing death and dying. We are using Stephen's book.
I read A Year to Live twenty five years ago. I am reading it again now in preparation for death. It is just as profound today as it was then.
Please let me know your thoughts on how Stephen knew so much about the internal workings of what we experience as we die. This question keeps coming up in our group and I am unable to answer it.
May you be well.
gratefully,
rochelle

Dear Stephen ... you and Ondrea saved my spiritual and emotional and physical life. I am so sad that Stephen has passed on. You and Ram Dass and Ondrea helped to keep me going even when the going was really tough. You will always hold a special place in my heart and spirit. As I light this candle, I remember vividly your words

Having taken several seminars with you both, and read all of Stephens work; I can state that it was your encouragement that allowed me to keep my heart open in the hell I was in. Later owing to the compassion and wisdom you imparted, I became a social worker. You both saved me for the life I was born for.

I dedicate my work to you and other loved ones.

I am unable to find any words to thank you for allowing me to be open to the infinite space of the heart that we all share.
Please accept my deep enduring heart driven thoughts for you both.

Dear Teacher, I heard today of your passing. I remembered your guidance as I worked with the dying in Human Support at the hospital where I was working. Your books started me on the journey of mindfulness and you gave me the strength to be there for the dying as they faced their transitions.
I 'm grateful to you and Ondrea.

Dear Ones, I know Stephen is on high still giving love to those who still suffer. Your work has been a great light in the darkness. There will be a memoral rose set into the Mary Garden in Paleako Peace Garden Captain Cook Hawaii on the Big Island Hawaii made by Dr Jane Hendrickson 2016 in Stephen's Memory. He will be missed but his spirit moves on even in the time of chaos. He will move into the larger realm of helping others as he is needed.
