William Freeman Obituary

WILLIAM JOSEPH BILL FREEMAN FEBRUARY 14, 2013 Bill Freeman, painter, potter, collector, cowboy, naturalist, mentor and more passed peacefully on February 14 at 9:30 PM MST. He was 85. Born in North Carolina in 1927, Bill Freeman was raised in west Texas on a cotton and flower farm outside of El Paso. During his storied life he was a horse wrangler and worked for the US Forest Service. At age 30 he decided to pursue his love of painting and became a full time artist, specializing in Western landscapes. Within two years, his work was being shown in important art galleries throughout the west and across the country. In the late seventies, he discovered ancient pottery and left behind painting to become one of the foremost makers of ancient pottery and antiquity replicas as well as a leading restorer, authority and collector of ancient Native American and pre-Columbian art. Bill Freeman also believed life and talent was something to share. As a result he mentored many young artists on not only the craft of painting and pottery making, but also about the hows, whys and realities of being professional artists. Bill was surrounded by dear friends and family (blood and adopted) in the weeks leading up to his passing. Bill is survived by his nephew, John Antweiler and wife Judy of Pompano Beach, FL and their children Jenny of Pompano Beach and son Andrew of Atlanta, GA; nephew, Dennis Antweiler and his children Christopher, Brandon and Jamie of Fort Meyers, CA; nephew, Ray Antweiler and his children Melanie and Cory of Aptos, CA; and his dear adopted family: Jade Leyva of Placitas, NM, Diane Witcher and Sarah Webber of Jackson Hole, WY, Lee Brotherton of Cave Creek, AZ, Carol Swinney of Caspar, WY and Vern Crites of Cortez, CO. A memorial gathering is planned at String Lake in Jackson Hole in July. I first met Bill when we purchased a lot and very old house in South Park in Jackson Hole. We spent many hours together and since I had worked in the art field we enjoyed all of his art together. I sold his art in Trail Side Galleries and after that sold him his real estate. Always enjoyed all of the oils and later all of the pottery. I have that great moose oil painting hanging in our entry hall today. Will miss him and will always be in our prayers and forever in our memory

My husband, Don Cannon and I met Bill when we lived in Scottdale, on one of his walks. He was the nicest man you could ever meet. He took me on one of his oil painting episodes and taught me much. I still oil paint. We moved to Show Low, Az. I wanted to express my condolences to Bill's family. I was saddened to read about his passing in the newspaper ( Az. Republic) My own husband, Don, passed away this last June. Perhaps Don and Bill can reunite wherever they are. I'm sure it's a better place. I will keep them both in my prayers.

Sincerelly,

Ramona Cannon

Where to start------
I first met Bill when I was in my teens, and he first arrived in the Blanco Basin. I'll be 65 this year.
For me, as much as I have loved his art, I do believe the most valuable thing he left behind was the relationships he had with people. I loved watching him find great pleasure in sharing his stories, his talents and his treasures. I loved watching him nurture and share with young people.
I remember sitting around fires with him and others enjoying his playing the guitar, and singing.
My first Bill Freeman painting is a wonderful 30x40 inch painting of our family property in the Blanco Basin. I was 16 years old, and he needed a pole barn built. I agreed to one week of my labor in return for his painting me this piece that I cherish so much. Those of you that have watched him paint know that back them he could finish a piece like that in less than a day. A GREAT deal for both of us.
We have 3 homes, and each of them have pieces of Bill's art. EVERY DAY of my life since I first met him he has been a part of every day. Every day I see at least one of his paintings, and I smile and remember the happy moments that knowing him brought to my life.
Bill---I will miss you very much, and I will always cherish having you in my life.

Bill was a special person. I made acquaintance with him while hiking. Soon he invited me and my young son to his home where he began mentoring Michael and teaching him sculpture and painting techniques. Together they created a sculpture of a pistol that hangs in our home and which visitors invariably believe is a real pistol. Our relationship was brief. He left Jackson, WY for New Mexico about a year after we met, but he will always be a special friend in our memories.

I have known Bill since I was 18 and he was 38. He gave me painting lessons at his place in the Blanco Basin in Colorado. He taught me to "look" and to see how things could be as they are placed upon a canvas. I have hauled his paintings and supplies far into the ares he wished to paint and watched him as any student would do.
I watched him paint, hauled horses for him, helped build his Colorado home, visited his Scottsdale home (just a short distance from mine), saw his movement to pottery and knew he would do well whatever he did.
He taught me many things over the many years I have known him. I talked to Bill and informed him I have been selected to the George Phippen Show since 2007 which made him very happy.
A quiet man who once helped a blind Elk and a very talented person. I will miss him very much.

Bill was an amazing man! I grew up next door to him on Mescal Street in Scottsdale AZ, and he had a huge impact on my life. Bill always had his door open to the neighbor hood kids. He would let us paint, work on pottery and teach us little things about the Indian culture as we would visit. He was an amazing artist and am proud to be able to say he was part of my life during my childhood. To this day the smell of paint reminds me of him.
