PETE GURULE Obituary

PETE ANDREW GURULE

Pete Andrew Gurule, 40, of Santa Fe, was tragically taken from us on January 18, 2021. He leaves behind two young sons Quentin and Silas, his wife Amber, his sister Christina and brother-in-law Shaun, brothers Patrick and Matthew, sister-in-law Meghan, mother Rosemary, grandmothers Consuelo and Christine, nieces, nephews, his dog Beatrix, and a wide community of friends from around the world.
Pete was a proud seventh generation New Mexican whose deep love for the land, the culture and its people made any conversation with him a memorable one. He was a loving father who felt no greater joy than watching his children thrive. Pete had an eye for beauty, an ear for music, and enjoyed life's riches. He was part of a community of musicians, DJs, and artists, and rarely missed an opportunity to witness the high art of live performance in his hometown. He adored spontaneous travel and inspired others to join him on the road.
Music was his first love. Pete dedicated 20 years to his KSFR radio show, the Friday Nite Mixx Fixx and played a wide array of genres for his midnight listenership. His stewardship on the air introduced new artists and music to listeners across the planet. Pete was notorious for giving local DJs their first experience of broadcasting on the radio. He was steadfast and dedicated in support of others following their dreams.
After spending several years working for the State of New Mexico, Pete's journey lead to Healing Arts where he met his wife Amber. He would become a skilled intuitive massage therapist and entrepreneur, building a large network in service to the community he loved. The duality of his chosen professions allowed him to share the joy of music and offer a healing touch to friends and strangers alike.
Pete was happiest when surrounded by his family, friends and loved ones. He raved endlessly about his family's traditional recipes and raved all night with his friends in the desert, often bringing his Grandmother's famous red chile and Aunt's biscochitos to share at sunrise.
Pete will be remembered for the humility in his eyes, his openness and authentic smile, the deep connections he scored in four directions, the warmth he gave, his thirst for knowledge and search for truth, his sincere generosity and compassion for all creatures great and small, his playful exuberance and razor sharp wit. Pete's death is a huge loss for his clan and community and will be felt amongst future generations. As we surround Quentin and Silas with love, please remember to tell Pete's stories, play his music, and keep his memory alive.
In lieu of flowers, his family requests contributions be made to the GoFundMe campaign in support of his sons, Quentin and Silas

My deepest sympathy to Amber, her boys and Pete's family. I met Pete January 2000 when he started working at TRD, he was an amazing and special man and I am lucky to have called him my friend. My best memories of Pete are the day he graduated from massage school, when he told me about his marriage to Amber and his joy and excitement at the birth of his two sons. I pray your special memories help you find strength and comfort through this difficult time.

Pete was a close and trusted friend, a men's group brother, a great hands-on healer, and a light in our lives. He was our house and dog sitter when we travelled, and each time we returned he was here to greet us with chocolate and flowers. Our deepest sympathies to the family. He sent us this wonderful photo in December ...

Pete, On behalf of the Santa Fe Century your commentary and music as a DJ really motivated the riders as they started the 100 and 50 mile rides and also as they rode across the finish line. During the interim, your music entertained the volunteers working on site throughout the venue. Surely the angels are singing your praises. Our heartfelt condolences to the Gurule family, especially Amber and the boys.

Will miss you big time, buddy. First met in 1st grade at Salazar Elementary all the way through Capital High A/V Library club and beyond. The only other guy I knew who could say the alphabet backward as fast as me. You shine like the sun, Mr. Gurule.

Pete taught me to listen and play music. And be a proud New Mexican and to say: “I’m from here!” And when he said that, we’d promptly be seated and have a bowl NM Red in front of us at The Shed.
