Conrad Kent Stephens

January 25, 1952 - June 21, 2021

It is with sorrow, but an abundance of love that we announce that on June 21, 2021, our devoted husband and dad, Conrad Kent Stephens, passed away.

On January 25, 1952, Kent was born in Denver, Colorado, to Dorothy Bonnie Stephens and Conrad Joseph Blay Stephens. In 1960, Bonnie, Kent, and his two younger siblings, Gayle (Stephens) Macias and Craig Stephens, departed Colorado for the Golden State. In California, Bonnie raised her three children as a single mother on a teachers salary. As such, Kent was the man of the house from a very early age and helped raise Gayle and Craig to be the outstanding citizens, parents, grandparents and aunt and uncle that they are today. Among Kent, Gayle and Craig, they each had two children, all boys. Kents nephews, Kenny and Ryan Macias and Cameron and Chad Stephens all share a reverence of their Uncle Kent and his devotion to having fun with the boys at every chance they had. Kents sons, family and friends all loved his sense of humor and wit.

As a young man, Kent was a gifted athlete, leading the Santa Maria Saints football team as a running back to many victories. Kents part in those victories included records that he continues to hold until this day. However, most important, while playing football he gained lifelong friends. After football, Kent became an avid javelin catcher, but later found out it was not a path where he could pioneer a bright future; the Olympic Committee ignored his pleas to make it an official sport.

In 1974, Kent moved to San Diego to attend college and then law school. He also took advantage of San Diegos coastline and became an avid surfer. In Ocean Beach, California, he met his future wife, Marian. On May 2, 1981, Kent and Marian married. Shortly thereafter, Kent and Marian decided to return to Kents hometown of Santa Maria to start their family and Kents law practice. Kent was a pillar in the Santa Maria Valley and Central Coast as a well-respected attorney, businessman, and philanthropist. He represented his clients with zealousness while respecting what the reasonable outcome must be.

Kent took immense pride in both Conrad and Evans professional accomplishments. Kent practiced as a solo attorney for more than 35 years before his son, Conrad, decided to become his partner in 2013. Kents years watching his son practice in their hometown was a highlight of the final years of his law practice that totaled 44 years. While some say working with family daily can present challenges, the rewards Kent and Conrad enjoyed will last throughout both their lifetimes.

Evan is a successful Certified Public Accountant and partner at a Bay Area accounting firm. Kent had great satisfaction in Evans accomplishments and acumen in financial and tax matters.

Kent passed down his love for automobiles and the mechanical to his sons. They grew up working on vintage British and American cars, including lovingly restoring a 1971 Triumph, 1966 Chevelle Malibu, and 1968 Camaro RS. Kent still holds the intercontinental, neighborhood land speed record on a Bull Canyon timed lap in a Triumph TR6.

Kent always supported local youth organizations and sports teams. He was a basketball coach for many years and taught his players the fundamentals of basketball and, of course, the art of the free throw.

Kent shared all of his life accomplishments while married to Marian, his wife of 40 years. Together they raised two successful, smart and loving sons. Kent and Marian did everything together from family vacations to working at the ranch tending to Marians beloved horses Romeo and Redford. Marian will forever miss Kent and their time together, which was more precious to her than words can describe.

In his retirement years, Kent found peace in two things: the coast of San Simeon where he and Marian had their second home and his dog, Ruby Tuesday. Ruby will miss her best friend and their walks on the San Simeon beaches and bluffs.

Kent died after living a life on terms that he dictated, which is the only way he would have it as all his family, friends, clients and colleagues know.

Kent leaves behind his wife Marian Stephens, sons Conrad and Evan, daughter-in-law Ali Stephens (ne Eschen-Villegas), siblings Craig Stephens and Gayle Macias and nephews and nieces, Kenneth Macias, Ryan Macias, Cameron Stephens (Nici Stephens), Chad Stephens, Caitlyn Prezyna, Torie Prezyna, Carly Lewis and Josh Prezyna. Kents greatest legacy is his granddaughter, Uma Stephens, who will miss her Papa K immensely.

Arrangements are being handled by Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary. A Celebration of Life will be held on July 15 at 11:30am at the Santa Maria Country Club. All are welcome, but an RSVP is requested.
