1922 - 2024
Guadalupe Martinez Lomeli, affectionately known as "Apa " to his family, went to be in the arms of Jesus on Sunday, August 25, 2024 surrounded by his family. He was 101 years old. Lupe was born August 29, 1922 in Nochistlan, Zacatecas, Mexico to Donato and Severina Martinez.
When he was younger he moved to different parts of Jalisco, Mexico. Lupe worked various jobs throughout his life such as a horse jockey, zarapero, cooking for Los Braceros and field work. Which led him to move back and forth from Mexico to the United States. In the late 1950s he met the love of his life Carmen in San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora at her family's restaurant. They were married on June 15, 1965. They moved to Guadalupe, California in 1971 where they continued to raise their children. Lupe was a part of the United Farm Workers Association where he met and had the privilege to work with Cesar Chavez. He would then support the local United Farm Workers Union as he would take his family to strike at the nearby stores. The joy of his life was taking care of his wife, children and being with his grandchildren. He especially loved taking long walks every morning and gardening his plants. He also loved watching western movies and sitting at the table drinking coffee and reminiscing countless stories of his life. He was also a well known resident in the city of Guadalupe.
Lupe was a faithful catholic and a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where he loved going to weekly mass and praying daily. Lupe is survived by his children Frances (Manuel) Espinoza, Luis (Yolanda) Martinez, Reyes (Martha) Martinez, Carlos Martinez, Daniel Martinez, Lupe (George) Uvalle, David (Lori) Martinez, Abel (Erica) Martinez along with 32 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandkids and numerous nieces and nephews.
