PORTER CORNERS – Joseph V. Grono, 81, of Route 9N, passed away suddenly Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019 at Saratoga Hospital. Born on Aug. 17, 1937 in Yonkers, he was the son of the late Marion and Josephine (Civic) Grono. Joe graduated from Yonkers High School in 1955 and from Westchester Community College with an associate degree in drafting. He was a star athlete in High School, lettering in football, basketball and track and field. He joined the United States Army on July 8, 1958, serving as a draftsman and as an MP, receiving the Marksman badge, until his discharge in 1960. Joe married Ruth E. Clark on Sept. 21, 1963 in Yonkers and the couple first resided in Hastings-on-Hudson for 12 years and then lived in Saugerties for many years, and in 1986, moved to their current residence on Rt. 9N, in Porter Corners. He worked as a lifelong printer, first for Carvel Ice Cream in Ardsley for many years, then KTB in Saugerties, and WL Coughtry’s in Albany, until his retirement. Joe was a longtime communicant of St. Casimir’s Roman Catholic Church in Yonkers and currently at Holy Mother and Child Parish in Corinth. He was a member of the Rev. John E. Dignan Council 3271 Knights of Columbus of Corinth, serving as Grand Knight for a few years, and currently was serving as treasurer. He enjoyed fishing, was an avid NY Giants fan, and enjoyed spending time with his girls and grandchildren. Besides his parents he was also predeceased by one daughter, Erin Elizabeth Grono; and two siblings, Leatrice Kopera and Ralph Grono. Survivors besides his loving wife of 55 years include four daughters, Kathleen Germain (Michael) of Kingston, Maureen Tagliafierro (Michael) of Porter Corners, Kellie Dickie (Timothy) of Schuylerville, and Colleen Mager (Stephen) of Hudson Falls; nine grandchildren, Emily and Ben Germain, John Paul, Michael, and Sophia Tagliafierro, Quinn, Hannah, Paige, and Andy Mager; two siblings, Donald Grono of Yonkers, Robert Grono of Spring Valley; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 28, 2019 at Holy Mother and Child Parish, 405 Palmer Ave., Corinth with Rev. Kenneth Swain, officiating. Burial with full military honors will be held at 2:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 28th, at the GeraldB. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville. Friends may call from 2-5 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019 at the Densmore Funeral Home, Inc., 7 Sherman Ave., Corinth. Members of the Horace D. Washburn American Legion Post 533 of Corinth will conduct a brief service at 4 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 27th at the funeral home. Members of the Rev. John E. Dignan Council 3271 Knights of Columbus of Corinth will conduct a service at 4:30 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 27th at the funeral home. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials take the form of donations to the Holy Mother and Child Parish, 405 Palmer Ave., Corinth, NY 12822.
