Marshall Wood Obituary

Marshall Robert Wood died peacefully at home in Savannah, Georgia on September 22, 2018 after living with cancer for five years.

He was born March 23, 1945 to George Leach Wood and Margaret Stonesifer Wood and raised in Louisville, Kentucky through his graduation from Seneca High School (1963). He graduated from Vanderbilt University (1967) and Emory University Law School (1970) and became a resident of Savannah in 1970 where he practiced Law for 30 years.

Starting in 1996, he instructed students at Armstrong Atlantic University as an adjunct professor and discovered a love for being an educator. It was through teaching and coaching at Savannah Christian Preparatory School (2001-2015) that he shared his passion for writing, civics, history, democracy, and athletics with students and colleagues.

In the community, Marshall coached youth sports and was an active member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church for 48 years. In everything he did, relationships mattered. Family, friends, and the community were his priority.

We will miss his love, his calm strength, his friendship, and the stories he told to engage us in the moment and connect us through the tapestry of his life. Marshall's life will be celebrated by Lynn, his wife of 51 years and love of his life, his children Sarah Collier and Jeffrey Wood (Lisa), his grandchildren Olivia and Vivienne, his brother G. Wallace "Wally" Wood (Patty), his aunt Anne Wood, and several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to join the family at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church on September 29, 2018 for visitation at 11:00am and his memorial service at 12:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances in honor of Marshall may be sent to Hospice Savannah Foundation or St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Marshall and I worked together on issues of Constitutional law when I was special counsel to Chatham County. Marshall was cut from a finer cloth than so many of the lawyers with whom I worked and against whom I contended. Marshall would drive me crazy by always characterizing me as "the nicest lawyer in Savannah". I have come to believe that Marshall elevated with kindness those with whom he came in contact. I know I was never the nicest lawyer in Savannah; I think that most kind lawyer was Marshall.

Lynn and family,

As you know, I met Marshall at the U.S. Government Advanced Placement scoring in Daytona Beach back in 2007. It was my first time doing this, but Marshall was a veteran. On the first day of the scoring, I walked from our hotel room bathroom wearing a polo and shorts and was asking the question, "how do people dress at these things?" As I looked up, there was Marshall wearing a dress shirt and pants and tying his tie! I froze. He recognized my concern right away and said, "Don't worry, you are fine. It is my tradition to always wear a tie on the first day of the scoring." I felt a little better and then asked him, "How any years have you been doing this?" His response: "This is my SECOND year." I knew from that moment that this guy whom I had only met hours earlier would be more than my roommate. His wit and sarcasm and ability to poke fun at the obvious matched my own. I knew that I had a met a friend for life. I will miss my friend.

Thoughts go out to you all.

Wood family,

Was saddened to hear of the loss of your father and husband. I know he was a great man and always enjoyed chatting with him and the humor he had but also chatting about his love for Vandy being we lived so close and our lives crossed many times throughout my growing up. Know that "the ones we love are never lost......as they will always live within our heart." Prayers go out to you and the family during this time.

I knew Marshall from I.N. Bloom Elementary School, the same piano teacher, then later at high school. He was a wonderful young man. I hope you find peace in precious memories.

He served as my attorney for a civil case against the state of georgia. He was very tactful, honesty and a great person to know in and out of the courtroom. from Curley Green and family
