He graduated from Duquesne University in 1951 with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. As an accomplished string bassist he was in The Wilkinsburg Symphony and the Pittsburg Youth Orchestra. He spent two summers on scholarship as bassist at The Aspen Festival. He then moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee and taught music in The Public Schools and played in the Chattanooga Symphony and the Chattanooga Opera Association Orchestra. In 1959 he came to Savannah, Georgia to take a position in the Savannah Symphony. And as Choral Director at Savannah High School he served there for 4 years. In 1963 he received a fellowship to play in the Louisville Orchestra and enroll in the University of Louisville and graduated with a Master's Degree in Music Education. In 1965 he moved to Nashville to take positions as Music Professor at Peabody College and play in the Nashville Symphony. He also served as Choir Director at St. Paul's Lutheran Church from 1959 to 1963 and then again from 1967 to 1970. Later, he left the public schools and took the position as Music Instructor at Savannah Christian Preparatory School and started their first String program and a band program as well. Later on he became interested in String instrument restoration and it eventually became his full-time work. He was an avid sailing fan and sailed his boat "Renaissance" in southeastern coastal waters for over 25 years. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Delaney Hofer, Cousins Joey Melley of Ft. Not sure what to say?

George Hofer was a music mentor and later in my life a confidant as well. He encouraged me, taught me how to love all forms of music, well except rap, neither one of us liked or understood it! I will always treasure the memories of youth orchestra and his belief in me. I am blessed to have been able to speak with him before he went to play in heaven's orchestra. Already knowing I didn't achieve my dream he simply asked in true form, are you happy? I was but not to say goodbye to a man I dearly loved.

Mrs. Hofer, I was sorry to hear that Mr. Hofer had passed away. He was a great person and a wonderful music director. He was my teacher at Savannah High 1959/1960 and a great one at that. I think of him everytime I hear the song, Battle of Republic. I can see him on the stage after 40 years directing that song. When we would go and sing at difference places. he really put his all in his work and expected it out of his music students and his choir. I pray that God will comfort you and all of his family. I know that God has a great choir director in Heaven now.

Mr. Hofer was such an inspiration in my life. I truly believe that he loved each and every one of us little "rag-a-muffins" in the Savannah Youth Orchestra. I credit George for teaching us that music is not just a part of our life, but a part of our soul. I treasure all of the memories. Barbara, I hope you can find some comfort in knowing how much he meant to all of us.

Dear Mrs. Hofer, Surely heaven has a new musician today. George was one of a kind. He taught my family so very much about music. Our oldest son went on to find a place in music education. We spent many hours in symphony rehearals, work shops, study, arguments, conversation, etc. George certainly had a place in our lives and we will always remember him. Wonder if he is planning a concert for our heavenly family? God bless. You are in our prayers. The Kujawa family.
