Herbert Berscheid Obituary

Herbert V. Berscheid, 84

Hawick

Jan. 29, 1927~July 9, 2011

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville for Herbert V. Berscheid, age 84, of Hawick, who passed away peacefully on July 9, 2011 at the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center in St. Cloud. Burial will take place in the St. Louis Parish Cemetery with full military honors.

Relatives and friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13 at the St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Herb was born January 29, 1927 in Kimball, MN to John and Rose (Loesch) Berscheid. He attended Kimball public school until he enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII. Herb was stationed in Italy following WWII, where he served as a Medical Tech. He married Evelyn Vouk on October 4, 1950 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sauk Rapids. They lived in St. Cloud for four years, and then moved to the Paynesville area after they purchased their farm west of Paynesville.

Herb was an avid hunter and thoroughly enjoyed wildlife. He had a particular fondness for pheasants and was always delighted to see the birds thrive on his farm. For his conservation efforts to improve pheasant habitat and providing winter feeding, Herb received the 1994 Pheasants Forever Kandiyohi County Conservation Award.

Herb had a passion for farming and truly enjoyed the farm life. During his farming years, he had dairy cows, farrowing sows, and also grew various crops. He was an innovative farmer who was willing to try new ideas and was one of the very first farmers in the area to install an irrigation system. He retired from farming in 1986 and remained on the farm until the time of his death.

He enjoyed visiting with people and was always ready to sit down for a chat. He looked forward to spending time with friends and family, especially his grandchildren.

Herb was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church and the Paynesville American Legion Post 271.

Herb is survived by his wife of 60 years Evelyn, children Gary (Jan) of St. Louis Park, Rick (Kathy) of Delano, Mary Berscheid of San Antonio, TX, Linda Carr of Clearwater, Debi (Bruce) Chapin of Willmar, Dave (Sue) of Denver, CO, Joe (Sue) of Fergus Falls, Herb, Jr. (Kim) of Maple Grove, and Ron (Kim) of Arden Hills, 14 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, sisters Rosemary Rice of Buffalo and Margaret (Karl) Metz of Hamburg, Germany and brother Val (Mary) of Kimball.

Preceding him in death were his parents, six sisters and four brothers.
