Helen Winebaum Obituary

YORK - Helen A. Winebaum, 90, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 2, 2018.

Helen was born in 1928 in New York City, the daughter of Helen Coburn and George Auerbach. She spent her early years living in Los Angeles and Chester, Vermont with her sister Marcia, who pre-deceased her. After graduating from the University of Chicago, she was active in stage, radio and television in New York. This was the time of early live television where she acted in "Studio One" and "Robert Montgomery Presents." As a stage actress, she toured in "Member of The Wedding" and "Picnic" and was featured in the Broadway play "Dark Legend." She continued her acting here on the seacoast with many starring roles at Theater-By-The Sea in Portsmouth, N.H.

She married Sumner Winebaum in 1953 and they had two sons, Sam and Jake. The couple moved to London, Milan and Paris where Sumner pursued a career in advertising with Young and Rubicam before settling into the seacoast of New Hampshire and Maine, first in Exeter and then in York for the past 32 years.

Helen had a lifelong passion for the natural world. She guided and supported The York Land Trust from its beginnings and was an enthusiastic leader of the "Mount A to the Sea" initiative, representing The York Land Trust. She was instrumental in the efforts that to date have helped protect what is now 14,000 acres of unique and threatened ecological habitat. She was also a Trustee of the Maine Nature Conservancy.

Helen was also a talented artist and as part of her passion for the arts served as a Trustee of the Currier Museum of the Arts in Manchester, N.H.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Sumner; sons, Sam and Jake, their wives Dominique and Cindy, and her four grandchildren, Nathan, Hannah, Jenna and Tess.

There will be no services. A celebration of her life is being planned. Donations in her memory can be made to the York Land Trust, 1 Long Neck Marsh Road, York, ME 03909. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, is assisting with arrangements. Visit www.lucaseatonfuneralhome.com.

Dear Sumner:

It was with great sadness that Donald and I learned of Helen's passing. What a wonderful, elegant lady. We so enjoyed seeing the two of you at the many events throughout the seacoast over the years and delighted in your "Dead of Winter" parties. We shall certainly miss Helen and of course her incomparable spirit. We hope that you are managing these difficult times with resilience and the help of family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I am so sad to hear of Helen's passing. It was with great pleasure that I have been able to style her hair for probably 25 years or more. I will truly miss our wonderful conversations about the land trusts and her acting days! I always looked forward to our visits. She was an amazing woman. Beautiful inside and out!
Love you Helen, Diana
