One of my favorite professors. Very modest but spilling with knowledge. I continue to teach concepts he taught me on color, geometry, and technique.

Francis was a friend and neighbor. He taught me much about art appreciation simply by being a friend. I miss him deeply. R.I. Gara, Emeritus Professor, UW

Francis Celentano was one of the first art teachers I had at the University of Washington. At the time I was not an art major, but took a basic design course in order to see what course instruction was like and get a distribution credit. His methods were very clear, and as it turned out illuminated very basic issues every visual artist must deal with in their work. At the time I thought certain projects he gave us were graduate level ones. They seemed too demanding for a course aimed at non-art majors. Later, when I finally became a painting major and then got an MFA, I remembered the projects he gave us and realized what he was trying to teach us was universal to any kind of painting, including figurative. I found myself grappling with the same problem in resolving a landscape composition that I found difficult to resolve in a design problem requiring an exact value gradation from white to black in 10 steps. He is one of the few instructors I have ever had whose specific teaching I remember.
