John Murray Obituary

John Staton MURRAY Seattle publisher and state legislator, passed away peacefully at his home, October 17, 2007. He was born in Albany, Missouri on August 18, 1925 to Geoffrey and Cecil Murray. They moved to Seattle when he was twelve. As a teen, he played saxophone in dance bands. Even decades later he could pick up a sax and play "In the Mood" or "Take the A Train". John graduated from Lincoln High School where he met his future wife, Virginia Hesketh. He was an avid skier and mountaineer, climbing the six highest peaks in Washington. He joined the Army in 1943, building bridges across Europe for our advancing troops. He returned to Seattle in 1946, graduating from the UW in 1948. He was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. In 1953, he purchased the Queen Anne News, which grew into the Murray Publishing Company, printing dozens of local newspapers, including the Issaquah Press, Magnolia News, Lake City Star, the Argus, and the first Vietnamese and Norwegian papers in the state. His weekly front-page editorials addressed community issues and explained the political decision making process. Elected to the Washington State House of Representatives in 1966, he served four years in the House followed by eight years in the Senate, championing some of the first environmental bills in the nation, and was instrumental in establishing twenty-two community colleges and The Evergreen State College. He was the prime sponsor for standardized training for law enforcement officials, and professional degree programs available through community colleges. John was a member of the Rotary, Kiwanis, and Lions clubs, Queen Anne Chamber of Commerce, served as president of the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association, first chairman of the State Oceanographic Commission, and on the boards of the Seattle Children's Home and the Queen Anne United Methodist Church. John retired in 1988, marrying his long time love Jean Peters Colman. They enjoyed skiing and travel between their homes in Utah, Arizona, and Seattle. He was a loving husband and father, generous, kind, and always encouraging with his rational perspective. He is survived by his wife, Jean Colman; his brother, Alan Keith Murray, of Maryland; former wife, Ginny Murray, of Seattle, and their children, Jeff Murray, of Orcas Island, Nancy Rowland (Randy), of Seattle, Jill Hamilton (Craig), of Tacoma, Robert Murray (Micaela), of Lake Forest Park; stepson, Ken Colman (Sharon) of Birch Bay; stepdaughter, Christine Colman (Steve Johnson), of Seattle; and eleven grandchildren.

I knew John as the father of my dear friend Nancy (Nela) and as someone who gave me a job to help pay for college. He was very kind and generous, and tolerant too -- he let me paint a Christmas wall mural in the hallway and even be a substitute editor for the QA News. I'll always be grateful. My deepest sympathies to all of his family. Love, Alice

John was an idea guy who could look at the now and envision its potential. Fortunately for me, he used that gift to hire a young, green kid just out of college to work in his composing room and launched a nearly 30-year career now. I'll always be grateful. It's like old home week full of similar fond memories looking at the familiar names who have signed here. Rest in peace, John, and my condolences to your family.

I worked at Murray Publishing Company from 1979 to 1989. What impressed me most about John was that he was a very approachable owner who gave his employees a lot of latitude and the opportunity to grow. I remember there was a framed statement about loyalty being the most important attribute an employee could give to an employer that hung in the Composing Room. JSM returned that loyalty in kind. The world is a better place because of John's participation in it. My thoughts and prayers go to his family.

Very fond memories of MPC. A company that provided great growth opportunities for those interested. John Murray will always be remembered.

I got my start in advertising at
MPC selling for QA News and View Northwest Magazine. The sales team
wasn't the most disciplined bunch,
and John always encouraged us to do our best. A very kind man and good leader. Jean Coleman used to throw me out of production because I'd tie up the typesetters trying to get the ads right. I own an ad agency now and learned much from John, Jean, Lud Kramer, Mickey Canaan and many other there.

I worked for John at The Queen Anne News back in the 60s & 70s and have so many good memories. He was very kind, generous, and was an all around nice person. I'll never forget when he had me (at age 16!) take a sliver out of his hand because he couldn't bring himself to do it! It's funny what things you remember. Anyway, the state was the benefactor of his leadership and I feel honored to have known him on a personal level. My sympathies go to Jean (who I remember from QA News days), Ginny (who took me in one day when my Mom wasn't home as I arrived from school), and to John's children (I hope that you are doing well Jeff). John was a great person who will be greatly missed. Ann Adam

John was a great leader and visionary. I worked for MPC back in the late 70's and 80's and enjoyed working for he and his family. I now work for the Seattle Times enjoying a career that started at MPC.
