Mason Scott Osborne

Mason Scott Osborne, III (usually known as Scott) died on July 4, 2014. The cause of his death was cancer.

Scott was born on September 2, 1946 in Rupert, Idaho. His father, Mason Scott Osborne, Jr., was born and raised in Texas, and his mother, Olive May Williamson Osborne, was born and raised in California. Scott's father was a Baptist and later Methodist pastor. Scott's mother was a musician.

Scott went to grade and high school in Lacrosse, Washington. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1968 with a degree in physics. He earned his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1972 at Yale University. He then taught mathematics for one year at the University of Michigan and for two years at the University of Chicago. He came to the University of Washington in 1975 and later became a full professor there. He taught at UW until his retirement in about 2010,.

Scott published two books, Basic Homological Algebra in 2000 and Locally Convex Spaces in 2014, as well as various articles in mathematics journals.

Scott grew up in the United Methodist church. After he came to Seattle and until his death, he attended Lutheran churches.

Scott is survived by his sister, Florence Osborne-Snow.
