Kathryn Bowden Obituary

Kathryn Louise Miller BOWDEN Kathryn Louise Miller Bowden, age 100, died in Seattle on Sunday, October 4. She was born in Spokane on September 5, 1909, the daughter of Elsie Madeleine Rosensweig and Frederick Edga Miller. She was a summa cum laude graduate of Washington State College, received a masters degree from Mills College in Oakland, California, and worked for the Department of Agriculture as a home economics extension agent in Whitman County. She married Richard William Bowden of Everett in 1940, and they began a life together in the US Army during WWII. After her husband's retirement from the Army, they moved to Seattlein 1965. Mrs. Bowden was a docent at the Seattle Art Museum and a founding docent of the Seattle Asian Art Museum. She was formerly a member of the Church of the Ascension in Magnolia where she served on the altar guild and was an archivist for the parish. More recently, she moved to Exeter House and joined Trinity Episcopal Parish Church in downtown Seattle. She was predeceased by her husband and her daughter, Helen Matilda Bowden-White. Surviving arethree daughters: Kathryn Bowden Groth of Frederick, Maryland; Frances Bowden Affandy of Bandung, West Java, Indonesia; and Elizabeth Bowden-Smith of Palo Alto, California. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Kathryn Mathe of Budapest, Hungary; Elisabeth Brodell of Williamsport, Maryland; Edward Tipton Groth of Mountain Top, Pennsylvania; Roland Smith of Mountain View, California; Gabriel Affandy of Lexington Park, Maryland; Michael Affandy of Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Also surviving are six grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, at the corner of 8th and James Streets. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Trinity Episcopal Church Building fund; The Christian Children's Fund; or The Exeter House Employee Education Fund.
