Gloria Campbell Obituary
Gloria Mae "Pete" CAMPBELL Gloria Mae Campbell, designer, wife, mother, grandmother, passed away suddenly at home in Edmonds, WA on December 12, 2009. She is predeceased by her beloved husband, John M. Campbell, who passed away March 4, 2000. Gloria Mae was born in Ely, MN on Dec. 19, 1925 to Selma and Jacob L. Pete. She attended the Art Institute of Chicago where she earned a B.A. in Interior Design and a M.A. in Textile Design. Her career included positions at Architecture and Textile Design firms in Chicago and New York City. She fell in love with John in NYC and they were married in 1954. In 1965, Gloria, John (a Boeing engineer) and their twin daughters moved to Edmonds, WA. In Edmonds, Gloria continued designing and weaving nature-themed tapestries using a full color palette and Sweden-knot technique to create award-winning textiles which were displayed in corporations, galleries, & art exhibits. Gloria served on the Edmonds Art Commission for 8 years; helped to start the Edmonds in Bloom Art Exhibit and a local chapter of the Home Fashions League (IFDA.) Gloria and John lived a happy life together; supporting each others interests; going to the theater and sharing wonderful vacations. An avid swimmer all of her life, she reported that it helped her arthritis and vitality. Her secret to life was to "keep moving!" Gloria was a talented artist, pianist, cook, gardener, canoeist, skier, ice skater, and "crossword puzzler." She had an ability to adapt to life and wake up to a new day with renewed spirit! She relished jaunts to museums, nurseries, and walks on the waterfront. Gloria appreciated her friends, neighbors and her swim buddies, Ruth and Kirsten. She loved spending the holidays with her grandchildren, knitting sweaters for them and baking their favorite rum pumpkin pie! We will miss her smile, humor, puns, and stories of her youth, as well as her motherly support. She will be in our hearts forever! Gloria is survived by her daughter, Morna Campbell of Oakland, CA; daughter, Moira Campbell; son-in-law, David Atherton; grandchildren, Collin and Elaina Atherton of Sammamish, WA and many relatives and friends. She requested no services. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in her name to Fire 1 Foundation (425) 551-1200 or, the Edmonds Center for the Arts (425) 275-4485.
