He attended Green Park Elementary school. He was a 1947 graduate of Walla Walla High School where he played on the football team. He went to the University of Washington, and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity. He earned a degree in Business Administration.

He served in the US Army as a 2nd Lieutenant during the Korean Conflict. After briefly working in the Bay Area, he returned to Walla Walla where he joined his Father and Uncle in the family business B. He handled it with a steady hand and a smile.

He loved joining a group of fellow community leaders for morning coffee at the Red Apple.

After his wife's passing in 1997, Alan made plans to sell the business and retire. He met Regina "Jean" Austin through mutual friends. They married in January of 2000 and Alan moved to Kirkland. They enjoyed world travel. They also purchased a winter home in Rancho Mirage, CA Alan enjoyed morning walks with friends. The couple were members of Herzl Ner Tamid Congregation in Mercer Island. Uncle Alan, if we could turn back the clock. I would be over visiting at the Palouse house with you and Aunt Jean. It would be a beautiful Walla Walla summer day.

I had the pleasure of knowing his wife and babysitting Dan, their son. They were always friendly. Dan still keeps in contact with my daughter Stephanie.

Mr. Barer was so kind. I interjected with him in the care of his wife and also with the "gas" business. Always so nice and helpful and took good care of his wife. Condolences to the barer family.

Alan was a great guy to work for and I greatly enjoyed sharing his "old" Walla Walla memories over the years. Dan, Mike and Steve have lost a wonderful father and we've lost a good friend and mentor. I'll never forget his kindness and sly sense of humor.
