Ruth Dunlop Obituary

Ruth Lightfoot DUNLOP Born October 19, 1918. Ruth Lightfoot Dunlop, of Christwood, Shoreline, died peacefully on February 24, 2005, 86 years old and intellectually as sharp as ever. Ruth was raised in Northern Ireland, and gained a double first class Honours degree in French and German at Queen's University, Belfast, where she met Robert, a medical student. Ruth was recruited to join the Enigma code- breakers at Bletchley Park, where she served the British and US Intelligence Services through much of World War II. Sworn to secrecy for thirty years, her family only then found out just how she had served her country during the war. She married Robert, a Royal Air Force doctor, in 1943, and after the war, settled in Cornwall, England, with her children, Elizabeth, Robert and Michael. After her husband's death in 1968, Ruth moved to Seattle, Washington, where Elizabeth had moved, and soon joined Kings Garden (Christa Ministries) as Executive Housekeeper. When Christa Ministries opened the Christwood Retirement Condominium, Ruth became the Marketing Director, and assisted hundreds of residents in their transition to the peaceful retirement lifestyle of Christwood. It was only natural that she would move to Christwood on her own retirement well into her 70's. Our mother was one of the brightest women of her generation, a pioneer in womens' march to equality, and there was no one who could match her skill at crosswords. She was proud of her childrens' success as entrepreneurs in America, and we are grateful for her support and we honor her memory. Ruth wanted to join her husband Robert in the beautiful little cemetery in Cornwall where he is buried, and soon she will. Ruth leaves behind daughter Elizabeth, sons Robert and Michael, grandchildren Alison, Katie, Megan, Andrea, Alex, and Patrick, great-grandchild Alyssa, and never forgetting her favorite rock musician, grandson Christopher who passed away two years ago. We will miss our Mother and Grandmother. Memorial Service at St. Dunstans, N. 145th St. Seattle, 1.00 p.m. Weds., March 2, and reception to follow at Christwood Activities Center.

She will never be forgotten! Such an elegant, kind and wise lady. She was the head of the Housekeeping Department when I was Director of Nursing and ARNP in CRISTA Skilled Nursing and when I was Administrator at Cristwood Park, she volunteered to cover the Main Desk at the lunch hour. It was a delight to take her a cup of tea in an English cup each time she was there. What a history with her war time secret work and her knowledge of French and German! She was adored by all of us. I was fascinated watching a special on TV about Bletchley Park and "The Girls" who worked there. I was reminded of Ruth Dunlop--a resident of Cristwood Park in Shoreline--and the day she was able to tell us of her work breaking German codes in WWII. It was a secret she had to keep for 30 years--even from her family! As Administrator in the senior community in which she lived, I loved to stay around at the lunch hour where she volunteered to be the Receptionist at the Main Desk, just to spend time with this elegant and brilliant lady and to serve her tea in an English cup. When planning to travel to various countries and leave a plaque in the churches of my ancestors, I had Ruth translate into German, the one needed for that country: "To the Church Where our Ancestors Worshipped the Living God; Generation After Generation Have Loved and Served Him." Upon return to Europe, we found the plaques still hanging in the church hallways. Ruth will always remain one of my "Most Unforgettable Characters."
