Growing up in the Oakland Greek Orthodox Church in the late 1940's and 1950's, many of us born here to immigrants wanted to fit in to America without losing our "Greekness". Andy stood out because he had done that. He was born here, was a veteran, and the old immigrants deferred to him. He was an example for us.
I was asked to be one of the photographers for the OSS statue dedication in Greece in 2005. It was a special honor for me, as a 1960's era paratrooper, to be able to accompany Andy and two other veterans, Nick Cominos and Angelo Lygizos. It was humbling to be welcomed by them. Sixty years after WW2 they were still American G.I.s, but with Hellenic "filotimo".
Andy was the last member of Co. C, 2671st Special Reconnaissance Battalion. He was the end of an incredible era. His life story, documented in his book, has many lessons to live by - he didn't stroll through life, he made history. His was a well-lived life and he will be missed by many. Oakland, America, and Greece have lost one of their best, but from one old paratrooper to another, we'll meet again on that last drop zone.

A truly great man. Would have loved to have met him, but even more, would have loved to have had my Dad meet Andrew. Too bad my father passed before we-Pamela & myself--had met Paula. Maybe they are shaking hands now!
